Inconsistency is a feature of average teams. Honestly, when did we ever have a genuine top four roster? If you're being realistic the answer is 1986.

We had a top four side plenty of times in the NRL era.

Recently 2019-2023

2005-2010

1996-2001

What was so special about the roster during those years? Compare our Origin representation to some genuine top four rosters in 2020-22:

When you look at the number of finals wins per Origin rep over those three years we did quite well (finals wins) for our meagre resources (Origin representatives). We must've been very lucky:
