Most of the AFL'ERS I talk to enjoy watching RL on TV (when we get SOO or GF's on at decent times in the West that is!) Maybe it is just Perth people who are more open to supporting all sports, not sure?

well if enough of them supported rl maybe the reds would still be there.

and most RL fans i know think AFL is s**t.

we get lots of media on AFL unlike those insular AFL fans who hardly get any RL.

its why the sport manages to hang on to second most popular football code to RL, in that their media protect the sport.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and call you naive rather than ignorant.

The ARL probably didn't deserve Rupert, but they did call tenders for their problems.

My point was: Have you ever watched a RL game on the WACA? How about bought a season ticket and watched them week in, week out, at the WACA?

Grow up germ.

Kochie makes me squirm. That show could be worse than The Footy Show, it's a close run thing.

That Koch farkwit has an obvious distaste for RL. Too downmarket for the toff suck.

whats the bit in bold mean - i know its in english but perhaps the hot queensland sun has fried your brain.

do you see the irony in the Western Reds stabbing the ARL in the back to go to news ltd, and then news ltd shafts them later on by killing them off.

and guess who is funding the Western Reds travel costs now in hte JBC - yes, that would be the ARL.

we all know the ARL has always had the bests interests of RL as its main goal, unlike News Ltd or its SL clubs.

indeed, without news ltd covering the cowboys for so long, youd probably be a soccer fan now.

cheers

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Reds getting wound up was a "political" decision rather than lack of fans etc

It'll be sub-zero temperatures in north Queensland before the Cowboys get wound up.

They may have had a pretty sh*tty history early on bt look at the players they produce and what they have achieved.

Outstanding.

if they had as much fans as the S14 union sides gets now, they wouldve kept them in.

how much had their (western reds) crowds fallen to in the last year ?

i like the cowboys, but jonathan thruston, luke odonnell, carl webb, ray cahsmere, sione faumina & justin smith came from other nrl clubs.

and the cowboys were losing money for years, without news ltd behind them they wouldve died off years ago. lucky news stuck by them and covered their losses, unlike what they did with perth, allowing them to die off.

As far as I know The Reds where axed as part of the deal between the SL and ARL,The crowds here halved same as the did in Sydney, people did not want a bar of anything Murdock.
Thats was in my humble opinion the biggest mistake the League made, throwing out a market of a million people, the only reason the Dockers got of the ground was cause the AFL sh*t itself when it saw how well RL was doing

The Reds got wound up because they were a money pit. Even before the peace deal was brokered, they were getting the arse in favour of Melbourne. The only way they were staying in was if News could have convinced another Sydney club (Namely Norths) to jump ship for SLII. Once Norths stood strong, it was curtains for the Reds. And ultimately, curtains for Super League. And if the Norths Board had a crystal ball, I'm sure they would have jumped because it was curtains for them too.

if news ltd wanted to carry on with the club they couldve. around $9 million in debts, is similar to what many other SL clubs were carrying at the time as well but news ltd stuck with them.

news ltd chose other SL clubs ahead of perth to survive. if they were getting massive crowds at the time, they mightve chosen perth over canberra for example.

news Ltd had to pick which of its clubs to survive, and it deemed perth were less worthy than cronulla for example.

as an example, how much money do people think news ltd have loaned into the storm since 1999? it would be heaps more than the $9 million debt perth were carrying when they went under.

Agree DM,if News Ltd pulled the rug out from under melbourne its bye bye storm.

Considering the amount of sponsorship that the club gets, as well as a new stadium coming up, I don't believe that would be the case. I agree that in the last 10 years it would have been the case, as it took a lot of money to get the team going, and it probably would have fallen over if News stopped funding it, but I think the club is now strong enough to stand on it's own 2 feet.

No one knows how much sponsorship the Storm gets. News Corp pays into the club coffers a fixed amont of 'sponsorship' Dollars. They take whatever the club gets from Sponsorship. In effect, they subsidise the gap between the two.
