Dogs Of War said:Considering the amount of sponsorship that the club gets, as well as a new stadium coming up, I don't believe that would be the case. I agree that in the last 10 years it would have been the case, as it took a lot of money to get the team going, and it probably would have fallen over if News stopped funding it, but I think the club is now strong enough to stand on it's own 2 feet.

Not to mention the much improved corporate facilities.Dogs Of War said:I think people underestimate how important a new ground is. That oval they have currently puts people too far away from the action. Once everybody is a bit closer, Melbourne will add 5K to their season averages.
Perth Red said:The Reds drew 28,000 and 24,000 to there first two games. It showed what potential there was if the NRL had stuck by them. Yes their crowds dropped dramatically, yes they were in debt but that was no different to every SL club back then. RL has a long history of shooting itself in the gonads and the decision to axe Perth was just one amongst many major c0ck ups along the way. I would wager that a Perth team would have more home grown players, bigger crowds and stronger income after 10 years than teh Storm had.
Since the Reds were killed off Perth has got another AFL team a soccer team and now a S14 team. Shows what potential is here if only the NRL would open their eyes.
dallymessenger said:maybe the reds would still be around today if they hadnt chosen to vote with SL.
that there is no NRL team in perth today is the fault of the old club to go with SL.
its the price paid for being disloyal. dont whinge that their is no team there now, its not the fault of the ARL. indeed, that the ARL is funding their travel costs this year in the JBM is a fantastic gesture. it shows the ARLs interest in developing the game.
the reds stabbed the ARL in the back and went to news ltd, then news ltd then returned the favour and killed them off when they got what they wanted from the SL war - the Pay TV rights. Karma
Perth Red said:I don't blame the ARL (totally) for the demise of the Reds, it was an NRL decision (who happen to be part ARL). Nor do I blame the Reds management for siding with SL, at the time it was the only decison they could make given the money the ARL v SL were both offering the club and the financial position the club was in (due in big part to the ridiculous travel cost scenario).
Whoever made the decison and for whatever reason it was mind blowingly stupid and the sooner the Reds are back in the NRl the better.

The Reds didn't have a choice.
The ARL forced them to pay for all travel costs and ALL travel costs for away teams when they were playing at home - they began losing money fast and didn't have a choice - when SL came along with an open cheque book!
The ARL/SL peace deal was one of the stupidest things ever in the history of RL
dallymessenger said:thank god the ARL dont hold a grudge and are covering their travel costs. how much are News Ltd putting into their budget?
Perth Red said:Nothing, hell we can't even get the NRL to give us a game or two. Fortunately for the sport the ARL are doing what they are there to do which is develop the grassroots of the game. Whether in NSW, Tasmania or WA that is their role.
I believe you are mistaken there perth red as warl have not sought a game from the nrl since 2005 as the force kicked off here last year and they are focusing on the jim beam cup next year
Gallop is a visionless stooge and I doubt very much if it was left to him we would ever have a NATIONAL RL.
gallop alone does not make the decisions it is the board of the nrl
You have no idea what the situation was for the Reds in 96 so keep believing what you want to believe if it helps you sleep better at night.m(Interestingly I haven't read you suggesting the NRL would be better off without the NSW and Q'land SL clubs, is it SL or just expansion you don't like?)

our C&A sponsorship alone is more than a number of clubs make overall
