Australian Rules Football Queensland plans to invite a Papua New Guinean AFL team to play in Australia.
Earlier lAFL PNG gets invite from Queensland to join inter-state competition Last month, Queensland AFL CEO Michael Conlan visited Papua New Guinea to make known the QAFLs plans to introduce a PNG AFL team in the Queensland State competition by 2016.
The move will be similar to the PNG Hunters inclusion in the Queensland Cup competition.
Conlan met with the Sports Minister, Justin Tkatchenko, after which the latter expressed the PNG Governments full support to AFL PNG.
We had a pretty good meeting with the CEO of AFL Queensland. He wants to introduce a PNG team by 2015 to the Queensland AFL competition, and have games here and also in Queensland.
Its a big opportunity.
They are willing to go fifty-fifty, counterpart funding, either in with the government or with AFL, to make it work Tkatchenko said.
This is easier than the Hunters entry into the Intrust Super Cup which took us three years to achieve.
As for AFL, knowing that we have the support of the Australian national and state (QLD) AFL bodies, PNGs entry will be easier, Tkatchenko added.
As sports minister, I and the government give AFLPNG our full support and we look forward to making it into a success.
