Alan Smith a Red Devil?

Can someone explain to me the justification of £7million move by Alan Smith from Leeds United to Manchester United? Don't get me wrong, if any club has bought horribly over the past few transfers it's been mine (Chelsea) but even still there are rumours that suggest Van Nistelrooy will look to leave as a result of Smith's purchase.

I think, it has the potential to be a good move. I really like Alan Smith as a player, although his finishing is questionable on my part. But then why buy Saha and Smith in twelve months? Hmmmmmmmmm...

What do you many Red Devils fans think about this transfer?

Yeah Forlan will be shown the door for sure, and ole will be playing his wide role for most of the time now...Man Utd can use a 3 striker rotation with RVN being the main man and Saha and Smithy pretty much taking turns...

Bye Bye Smithy :(

United were most successful with four strikers on rotation - Cole, Yorke, Sheringham and Solskjaer - in 1999. I think they have struggled at times since then because they've been over-reliant on van Nistelrooy - when he's not firing, there haven't been too many other options. Smith would give them that, alongside Saha and van Nistelrooy.

A loan deal to send Viduka to Galastaray got turned down by Leeds. Maybe Spain or at Roma.

Really Viduka and Smith would have been sold regardless if they went down or not.

I'm not really happy about this. Sure, he's better than Forlan but Smith is going to expect to be more than just 4th choice striker. He will want about equal game-time as Saha.

The thing that I'm most disappointed in is that it pretty much destroys any chance of going after Rooney or Torres. Either of those would've probably been happy to interchange with Saha as Ruud's partner for a season or two, but now with Smith in there as well we'll simply have too many strikers expecting games. And he is nowhere near the class or potential as either of them.

Alan smith once said on Soccer AM that the only team he would never go to is ManU and how much he loves leeds and would stay with them forever, i think he is a trator for going to ManU

I wont be so sure on RVN being at Man U next season.

I know he has re-signed, I know he has said he isn't going anywhere, but when there's smoke, there's fire, and I remember full well about David Beckham deneing he's off to Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan and Inter Milan.

And now look now, Beckham has gone to Real Madrid, and it won't surpise me if RVN went there, since they both played together before, and if nothing else, they both speak the same language (both English).

Smith has bags of potential IMO.

I'll bet he will be ahead of Saha in the pecking order about a quarter of the way through next season. A good move for all concerned.

Not worried about Ruud going what-so-ever. He just re-signed, he's not only said that he wants to stay at Man Utd but that he likes the English lifestyle more than the Spanish, Fergie has said that we're not selling him, and we don't exactly need money. Add all of that together and it's quite easy to see he won't be going anywhere. The only 'smoke' there is that Real want him, and that's hardly a surprise.

Completely different situation from Beckham. Fergie wanted him gone, so the only question was who he was going to.

Becks said he wanted to stay at Man U and wasn't going anywhere.

Similar thing happened with Ronaldo and Inter.

I second that

Viduka is looking/hopeing for a move to Valencia...but there are some manager issues or something there.

I've heard teams like Barcelona have been in interested in him in the past. But they seem to interested in Owen, RVN, Henry etc.

Then again I'm sure he might like to try his hand at Roma.

Good business from Leeds.

7 million pounds for Smith would be good money at the best of times but considering we're down and we HAVE to sell it's a very tidy little transfer indeed.

I Think 7 Mil is a bargain for Smith, I think he can be a real success at United, I really do. The bloke has heaps of potential but is a little rough around the edges. He's young, he's good in the air, he can physically hold his own and he plays with as much passion as anyone.

Besides realistically United were not going to buy either Rooney or Fernando Torres.
