MATE versus mate, school against school.Later tonight two of Kempsey’s brightest young rugby league prospects will go head to head in the final of the Australian Secondary School’s Rugby League championships in Darwin.
Albert Kelly, currently studying at Patrician Brothers, Blacktown, and Adrian Davis from Granville Boys High will face off for their respective teams in tomorrow’s final between NSW CCC (Combined Catholic Colleges) and NSW CHS (Combined High Schools).
The two have been regular rivals since their junior playing days and have also faced off in the prestigious SG Ball competition where they play for Parramatta (Kelly) and the Bulldogs (Davis).
Both play in the five-eighth position and the pair will be fighting to secure their place in the Australian Schoolboys squad to be announced following the final.
Kelly said the two had always shared a friendly rivalry, but the focus was on winning the final ahead of any thought of further representative selection.
“I wouldn’t say I’ve ever had it over him. He might have changed his game a bit since we played juniors, but it’s not too different,” he said.
“I’m not too focused on making the (Aussie) side. I just want to get through the game first.”
The NSW CCC side has been playing good football all week under the guidance of Mustangs coach Mark Morrison, winning both pool games and thrashing the ACT 54-nil to make the decider.
In their opening pool clash Kelly’s CCC squad got the better of Davis’ CHS team 14-12, with Kelly scoring the opening try for his side.
Alternatively the CHS side had a strong 32-10 win over Queensland before falling to the CCC team.
But they rebounded strongly in the semi final against the Queenslanders to win 26-12 and secure their place in the decider.
Both sides had a rest day yesterday before the final tonight, with Kelly predicting another close affair.
“It’s been pretty hot, a bit energy sapping,” he said.
“The first day was the hardest, but tomorrow will be a tough game.”
The match kicks off at 5.45pm tonight ahead of the announcement of the Australian Schoolboys side later in the evening.

Albert was quite subdued in the Eels SG Ball Defeat by the Roosters in the Grand Final. Having watched him a few times. He is a great individual player, just not much of an organiser or passer of the football. From what I understand Albert is still young enough to go around in the SG Ball next year.

Tim Auremi on the other hand, I think could make a step up to Under 20's sooner rather than later and is older than Albert. Bit of a Ball playing centre that could slot into the Back Row.

I Agree. He has played 5/8 for my high school for most of the year and has really excelled. He is a great organiser and isn't afraid to get involved.

Auremi is an unusual player. Improvises and does unexpected things. He played second row most of the year but was the general play kicker. Also likes getting into dummy half. He is as likely to throw a cut out pass (as though he is the half) as he was to take a hit up. He will get a good shot at u20s next season.

I think RUlon Nutira and Mitchell Johnson are the guys they should really out some effort into developing. Both are very tall and strong. Johnson was injured most of the season as was Nutira. I would have each of these fallas and obviously Nathan Gardner in the u20s next season.
