Courtesy of the Rugby League Project website, link to the list of all NSWRL First Grade games played by Ken Irvine -

His 212 tries came from 238 games. He also kicked 70 goals and 1 field goal. In his 16 first grade seasons, Irvine only played in 20 or more matches in first grade in 2 of those seasons, namely in 1969 for Norths where he played in 21 games and scored 17 tries, the other occasion being for Manly in 1971 where he played in 24 games scoring 15 tries.

The most tries Irvine scored in a season was 19 in 1959.

AJ is keeping me going.
Actually took 8 teenagers with me last night - my sons and their mates. When we got tickets, as we all went a to Souths v Dogs game, we thought he might have been a bit closer to record. With six more games I’m really hoping if we get the spoon, at least AJ matches the record.

AJ is the only ray of sunshine in an otherwise dark and gloomy year. The fact that he's on the cusp of breaking the record they said might never be broken shows what an unbelievable achievement it truly is.

I can see Johnston breaking this record that has stood for 50 years and then Tupou breaking it within 12 months. Should we start the Tupou thread now, or wait until Johnston is the record holder?

He will get his seniors card before he cracks 200.

Commentary team on Fox asked how breaking the record will be celebrated once it happens? Will fans be allowed to flock into the field like in the AFL? Any preferences?

No point using facts when someone is intent on trolling.
I'm not trolling. Tupou has proven without a doubt to be more durable than Johnston throughout their respective careers. He plays in a better side and has scored 31 tries in 2024 and 2025. Johnston in that same time has scored 20. And it's been repeatedly reported how those tries for Johnston dried up last time he was switched to fullback and he's there for the remainder of this year.

However, with recent news of Johnston signing for a further two years it makes it difficult for Tupou.

Tupou is going to end up with an impressive total but the reality is he's only going to be second behind AJ. Both players try-scoring abilities should be lauded.

Indeed. Daniel Tupou won't overtake Johnston as Daniel turned 34 years old in June of this year, whilst Alex turned 30 in January of this year. Both are very good wingers and should be lauded, but Tupou won't overhall any record Johnston sets considering AJ just signed a 2 year contract extension with Souths earlier this season.

So what is the prediction of when he'll break the record?
My prediction is round 25.
How about....

18-all in the last minute of the final round, Roosters attacking Souths line
Tedesco hogs it going for the hero try and drops it
AJ picks it up and runs 100m to score, winning the match, breaking the record, and knocking the Roosters out of the Top 8
Everyone storms the field

A bit of happiness after a bleak 2.5 seasons lol
