Tyrel Fuimaono was solid last night, I was impressed with his game.
Josh Kerr was no different to normal being lazy and giving away penalties.
Sloane was also impressive with little opportunity, as usual it was a boring game plan from Daley, the aboriginal side had a big advantage in pace last night and all they did was play one up crap all night while the Maori side used the ball.

Here's my pet hate, people don't like or rate a player so they just make shit up to put that player down.
Kerr didn't give away any penalties and wasn't lazy at all, in his 2 x 7 minute stints he made 15 quality tackles - no misses, no ineffective. His defence was great, stopping big blokes in their tracks. He made some good runs and gave his team really fast play the balls. He did his job and did it well.

The game was really messy but hard to expect anything else, first game of the year, 4 quarters, 20 a side ( interchanges 43 -51 ), rain persisting down and the ref happy let everyone know he was out there. I think the players let their emotions form the pre-game ceremonies get the better of them as well and carry that onto the field although Rapana trying to kill people didn't help.
But..........the footy's baaaaack !

Agree. I thought the ref was happy to let them slow the play ball down a bit too much at times in the 1st half but that is a by product of not making them all play the ball properly.
Rapana is just one of those simmering volcanoes.
Cant deny he puts in and often, (not like a J Leilua) but I thought that late body side shoulder bump to Currans mid riff where he got injured trying to score the try should of received more scrutiny. Was that legal or at least pretty late?
3rd strike and he would of been out of the game!

Yep, people can see whatever they want to suit their agenda.
Like Dufty, he could score 3 beautiful solo tries for us and half the forum would bash him for missing a tackle or dropping a bomb in the same game.
Great to have the footy back, Sloan looks to be lively, can’t wait.

I have not got a agenda on Kerr, i hope he does reach his potential.
He may have made some tackles but with his size his job is to make metres with hit ups.
We need go forward, and the only way Kerr will stay in first grade is to make yards with the ball

One of the angles they showed it looked like Rapana cocked his elbow straight into Currans neck. I said at the time the Judiciary might have a closer look at that. The holding down in the first half was really bad but maybe a bit of early fatigue, they would have spent a lot of nervous energy in those long ceremonial dances. I was waiting for the 6-again calls but they were rare.

An entertaining game showing some good footy . The rain didn’t help , however that didn’t stop both sides enthusiasm to throw the ball around and each other . A couple of the usual suspects in Fifita and Rapana ( both narks at one stage or other - must be something in their Gatorade ? ) showed their usual self control .

One other aspect of the game that truly pussed me off ( and it takes a lot for me to be pussed off ) was the ‘ captain’s challenge ‘ - what possessed the NRL to introduce that pickle-onion into the game is anyone’s guess .

All in all a good show by both sides for the very first match of season 2022 .

It was a tough first up game for all of the blokes. The weather wasn't very kind to the players and the spectators but under the circumstances the game was entertaining with a few niggles and jostles which is expected in these games.

As you know, challenges are now part and parcel of a lot of games, particularly as the technology is available to go back and check on things. When there was no ability to check, players/teams just had to accept the refs'/umpires' decisions.

Tough it certainly was D.D and both sides showed great attack .

To the captains challenge , I must confess that I have never liked it , the aspect that annoys me is how the players will stop the game and call to their captain and point out to him an error or whatever . In short they have brought the game to a stop - not the match officials , but the players themselves .

The game has linesmen and the referee , imo they and they alone should be responsible for stopping the match , not a bunch of squabbling players , mistakes occur , the players cannot expect the officials to see every action that takes place under a pack of legs and numerous arms.

Sloan won't have 19 on his back, but wing isn't his spot either. He scored a good try but also let one in by coming in leaving his opposite unmarked. Understandable if he is training as a Fullback which IMO is his right position.

Yes he did come in but his inside man or 2 did not wrap the ball up (when they were in a position to) and they still had 2 on 1 even if he didnt come in.
No he may not be a winger but I cannot blame him for that decision

Decisions made by the refs and assisted by the linesmen/women should be as given, agreed. The rub of the green tends to even itself out over time for each team just like the rainfall and temperatures averages themselves so too are the penalties and wrong/right decisions.

Yes I am still on the fence about captains challenge and it is no different for the ref going upstairs for a try as it kills momentum and or celebration....(which is my pet hate)
However most times the players know and they get more right than wrong so it may be better than what it was cause refs had lost that confidence or they had stripped away from them (via Sutton coaching) the decision making anyway.

But I have to say some of the bunker calls last night was very debatable (in respect to captain challenges and even that Tapine 1st try) and how they can make a clear cut decision to overrule on the evidence astounds me. Andrew Johns is right o_O make a quicker decision and favour the on field decision when not clear cut. and move on

Yep I thought Kerr was pretty good last night.
But Dufty was rubbish last season.

He's not a winger. Give him time, a few extra kilos and we'll have ourselves a tremendous utility back.

The speed is there. Just needs a little more bulk.

Sloan is such an exciting prospect but he did make the mistake on the Maori second try. Experience takes time...

TBH - I think this game should be a showcase for the younger up and coming players. The senior players have Origin & Rep games to focus on.
On the Captains challenge- never liked it. Just another tactic to slow down the game and eventually I can see the NRL moving onto quarters as well. They can’t help themselves with yearly changes to rules and structure of the game…

Its probably just me and this chop and change representing or who you pledge your allegiance to but it is funny to see Dane Gagai play for Maoris against the Indigenous when he used to be a passionate Indigenous player
