If the book is anything to go by this movie will be two hours of self indulgent clap trap. One of the worst books I have ever read, can't wait to miss the movie.

Chook.

The fact it is directed by Clint Eastwood is enough to put me off it.

I found the book a great read, not so much for the content (although it did at least give a first hand perspective on war not often put across in fiction that soldiers actually find war fun at times), but for the insight into how the mind of such a man works.

The bloke was a straight up lunatic and had some of the most basic "good vs evil" logic going round, which is probably how you have to be to do a job as effectively as he did.

I'm interested to see the movie to see what they do with it. I have a feeling they'll give it the standard hollywood treatment where he'll be turned into a loving family man who was exciting to go on an "adventure" but then gets all sad and melancholy once he finds out how terrible way is or some shit.

I thought the book was good in understanding a different mind to mine.

Did i agree or like the guy? not really but I think it could make a great movie that people will either love or hate.

I'll be watching it.

The screener has been out for a week.

Was a rodeo cowboy then started SEAL training after the US embassy bombings, got sent to the mid east shit holes after 9/11 and kept going back on tours even after the birth of his kids cause he felt like he was letting the rest of the troops over there down by not being there covering their arses on the ground.

Develops PTSD and starts helping veterans and helps himself in the process, gets killed by a deranged vet at a gun range.

Thought the book was good insight into what goes on during conflict.Thought the main character was an egotistical lunatic who was probably killed by the ex-marine because he was sick & tired hearing Kyle spruik about how good he was.

I don't get it... you hate the book, you don't want to watch the movie... why post a thread about it?

So the answer to whether or not they completely changed his story to make him seem like a hero is a big resounding "yes" then.

Wasn't sure if they'd add the part about him getting killed in the movie or not since it only happened recently, although makes sense as him trying to help out returned soldiers is probably the most likeable thing he does in the book.

Watched the movie, haven't read the book.

Was surprised when i googled him that he was off the rails, as he was portrayed in the movie as a fairly likeable character (Helped troops with less training, Hesitated to shoot women and children with arms etc etc etc) with a few flaws when he returned back home.

Sounded like they could have made him more mental and un-likeable in the movie??

A Shit tonne of movies are being released atm with evil protagonists

The not shooting kids thing is true. He only talks about a single time in the book where he had a kid in his sights, and he refused to shoot him (he'd shot an insurgent, then shot a couple more as they broke cover to pick up his gun. They then sent a kid out to collect it and he decided not to shoot him as he didn't shoot kids).

The anti-hero angle would have been much more interesting I think, but I can't see the yanks copping a movie about their troops that doesn't glorify them these days. They are very touchy on that subject.

Basically people don't like his black and white thinking - "they're savages".

Frankly this mindset is probably needed when ending a life without the threat of close combat making that decision for you.

He said he had knocked out Jesse Ventura and Ventura sued him and won. Even after he died Ventura continued with the lawsuit against his wife
