A few examples, could make a good thread :)

Jack Nicholson ...

He was born to play the Joker and he was born to play the Devil. Jack is a true legend, both roles fit him like gloves hehe.

Al PAcino ...

he was born to play mafia style movies. Definitely a tad typecast, but movies like Sea of Love, and Scent of a Woman show he's one of the best.

Brian Dennehy ...

Born to play every two-bit mini-series during the 80's and 90's. He sucked

Dennis Franz (NYPD Blue, Die Hard 2)

IF any git was born to play a fat donut-eating cop, this is THE MAN

Daniel Day-Lewis was born to play Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood. Same for Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York.

I'd say Jamie Foxx was born to play Ray Charles, not only the acting but he has the piano playing downpat as well.

Could anyone else have played Ace Ventura? Jim Carrey is one of those geniuses that doesn't always get the credit he deserves. Same for Robin Williams in Mrs Doubtfire.

Only Eli Wallach could have played Tuco in the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Truly one of the most memorable characters of all-time.

Marlon Brando was the only man at the time for Terry malloy in On the Waterfront. He was ahead of his time as an actor. And only Peter Sellers could have played the no less than 3 key roles in Dr Strangelove.

Bill Murray is also one of my favourites. I really can't see anyone else but him in movies like Groundhog Day and Lost in Translation. Great actor.

There are quite a few examples but i'll leave it at that.

Christian Bale - Patrick Bateman

He nailed the character which is almost impossible, because he's so complex, but he's exactly as described in the book.

in terms of a specific character ... al pacino gets two mentions: one as michael corleone

one of the all time flawless displays is the transformation of michael from when you first meet him in godfather as a sort of withdrawn character who is mildy week to the king pin in godfather 2

the other mention is obviously tony montana

when i was young i was obsessed with scarface ... bit over it now ... but pacino is this movie is acting perfection even if the movie wasn't. should of won an oscar

lawrence fishbourne as furious styles in boyz n the hood ... probably fishburne's defining role ... not only is he teaching his son but he's teaching the audience at the same time indirectly ... great movie too

edward norton - derek vinyard ... he pulled that off like it was second nature

robert de niro - travis bickle ... i dont think anybody could of done that not nearly as half as good as de niro.

and tommy smith mentioned groundhog day, i don't think anybody would of been able to do that film. bill murray has tremendous acting ability but at the same time he's a goof which is why he's so great ... better than williams, carey any other comedian actor ... neither of those two would of done ground hog day like murray

I'll go out on a limb and say I think Daniel Craig is as well suited to James Bond as Sean Connery was.

If you read Ian Fleming's earlier books, Bond comes across as being resourceful and not afraid of getting his hands dirty. While Connery played the suave, scotch-cigars and pistols Bond very well, Craig brings a grittiness and unpretentiousness that is very in keeping with the original Bond character.

5 years ago I could never have imagined a blonde haired, blue eyed Bond, but Craig pulled it off convincingly.

Also got to agree on Christian Bale playing Batman- he has that air of being slightly unhinged which is very fitting with Batman and his psychological make-up.

Anthony Hopkins - Hannibal Lector: No one could make him seem creepy and sophisticated at the same time.

Johnny Depp - Jack Sparrow: No one could make him as wacky yet at the same time respectable.
