IT LOOMS as a frightening preview of things to come for the Wests Tigers' NRL opponents. Twins Andrew and David Fifita, 21, are yet to play first grade together for their club, the Tigers, but they will make their international debuts alongside each other for Tonga at Parramatta Stadium on Sunday.
Andrew, of course, has already provided a glimpse of just how damaging he can be when in full stride, impressing hugely in a debut NRL season in which he featured 22 times and scored five tries. David, meanwhile, has been quietly building on his game in the second-tier NSW Cup with Balmain-Ryde Eastwood.
The lesser-known brother from Blacktown is intent on making the leap to the NRL, too, and joining with Andrew in raising hell for the Tigers. First, though, comes international duty, with both picked in their maiden rep squads for Tonga for the clash with Pacific rivals Samoa on Sunday.
The match is the curtain-raiser to Australia's opening Four Nations contest against Papua New Guinea. If the presence of the Fifitas - and the potential fireworks that could result - cannot drag patrons through the gate early, nothing will. ''Playing beside my brother, that's a dream come true,'' Andrew said. ''It's the biggest step of our lives, and it's doing our family proud playing for Tonga.''
The Fifitas, whose father is Tongan and mother is Aboriginal, assumed star status as they mingled with fans, schoolchildren and passers-by outside Parramatta Town Hall this week following a civic reception for the four countries taking the field on Sunday.
Andrew's profile has escalated to the point where he is instantly recognisable, and the reaction from the masses reflected that. He could hardly have a picture taken before someone was tugging on his shirt, or the Tongan flag draped around his shoulders, to request one themselves.
David received the same treatment, not presumably because of his deeds in rugby league to date, but more to do with the fact that, as an identical twin, he was being mistaken for his brother.
''It's a big step from [NSW Cup], skipping first grade, going to international [level],'' Andrew said of his brother. ''Hopefully one day in the future maybe [selection for] Australia could come. But for now this is more our goal - to get to the World Cup together.''
Andrew also has his heart set on representing NSW in State of Origin, an achievement that is not beyond the realms of possibility. David is seeking to follow in the path his brother has already trodden.
''When I first watched [Andrew] when he debuted I was like, 'It should be me out there with him,' but watching him playing out there all this year pushes me even harder to get up there with him,'' David said.
