RU is the only sport where I want England to lose. The media coverage they get is way out of proportion to the REAL popularity of the sport. Most Englishmen couldn't care less about any form of rugby until the media shove the RUWC down their throat, even then it has to be on the back of England doing well. Otherwise it's "forget it and let's get the soccer on telly".

I must admit I like see British tennis players getting humiliated at Wimbledon as I detest the faux 'passion' and jingoism that that tournament inspires.

I also wanted to see any British curling team get crushed - or better yet, the ice to break underneath their brooms - after the heretical BBC put so much coverage their way as it had no other sports to show.

Do you support your rugby union national team - e.g. Wallabies and All Blacks?

Just wondered because in England it seems many rugby league fans are hostile towards the England rugby union team. Is it the same down under?

I'm a proud Australian, therefore I have no regard for the wallabies, as they are not "my national team" , but the representatives of the contemptible aru.
I have watched snippets of the ruwc but can't get excited about it. The All Blacks and the French at times can play somewhat entertaining union, but I always have to remind myself of what they are representative of. In general I hope the wallabies lose, but not against lesser teams where it might have the potential to boost the profile of union in that country. I just hope that the wallabies play poorly all the time ( and most times they are able to oblige  )
From my position as a staunch Rugby League fan, I hope that the springboks win the ruwc against the All Blacks, with a score of say 30-14 , made up of 10 field goals to two converted tries. This I believe would be the best result for Rugby League.

The jingoism is whipped into a frenzy by crappy newspapers like the Sun and the Star. They then start Brit bashing when their champion gets dumped out of a comp. The BBC probably jumped on the curling bandwagon because basically we don't have that much to shout about when it comes to winning a sporting comp. They must have thought "Christ we don't win much so let's make the most of it while we can". I also despised the parade the England RUWC winning team received. Blair jumping on the populist bandwagon again. Same with the cricket team when they won the Ashes. How many other England teams in the past have won the Ashes and got diddly squat for their efforts. It was a slap in the face for all of the Englishmen who had won an Ashes series and been ignored. I bet Blair doesn't even know that there's an older rugby WC that was won by G.B. in 1972.

i love both.... ive been a big parra fan since i was a young lad.
my old man got me into the old winfield cup... i love the kiwis... they battle hard. they get a raw deal in NZ for media coverage... and there are some people that seem to have it in for RL in this country.. especially reporters. RL fans are the best in this country.. they are very passionate and they actually hang around alot longer than the union fans.. who are more fairweather fans.

but i love the all blacks... i like the fact that we expect to win every match we play in... no other national side in NZ has that about them... and the fact that the all blacks natural game has always been to attack. at the end of the season you always remember the 1 or 2 games they lost rather than the 10 or so games they won...

lets be honest... the all blacks keep rugby union afloat in australia... if the NZRFU pulled out of SANZAR i doubt murdoch would sign another tv deal.

I love leaguies! True leaguies follow their own form of bushido and there's some beautifully written stuff in this thread.

But of course it was inevitable that some NZ league fan or other would start talking about RU in positive terms.

And no one should try and tell you who to follow!

Trouble is for a lot of league fans we've had union shoved down our throats right from the first day of school. The NZ education system is pro union heavily and so is the media. With the education system it has acctively shunned rugby league for 100 odd years. My old man was a prefect at Sedden Tech a looooong time ago (i think it's call Ponsonby High or something now) and played league for Ponsonby. The headmaster told him that if he didn't stop playing league he couldn't be a prefect any longer.

Don't even get me started on my dealings with Kelston boys high and rugby league.

I think to be honest rugby union has done a lot of harm to it's self in trying to promote and protect it's self. To me i see union as the man or the establishment.

Just my 2 cents.

yeah bro... i know what your talking about... alot of my family is pro-rugby union. my dad used to coach union at provincial level. when i started playing league at secondary school level alot of my uncles and cousins threw afew jibes my way.

but my dad always taught me from a young age that they are different sports but both are outstanding in there own right. apart from that i never really saw much conflict between the sports growing up. probably because the old man was mates with the clubmen of both the local union and league clubs...

Your dad sounds a wise man. Shame more people particularly in the media and the education system weren't as fair minded.

Yes. All self respecting RL fans despise their national RU team. If they don't they're not a pure leaguie

If thats what it takes to be a"pure leaguie" (is that like pure bred arian?) then i am glad i am not one... any group that requires you to hate someone or a group of people who have a differing view point, before you are considered a member is a sick idea in the extreme...

I have played, coached and watched league for most of my life, easily longer than most who post their hate on here have been alive.... To say i dont love League because i also love Rugby shows a childish viewpoint in the extreme.

I knew you'd pop up sooner or later. Read my original post. I said in my opinion no true leaguie - not league fan - can like his national RU side because of the century of criminal persecution the sport exacted on RL. In fact, that was one of the very main reasons why I totally went off RU, as I couldn't bring myself to like a sport that is mired with such history. I consider it immoral.

You can. That's your choice. When did I say you don't love RL? All sports obviously have all kinds of degrees of fans/supporters.

But, in my opinion, no, you're not a pure leaguie. You're happy about that, so we're both happy. So, it's a good day in the RU-RL polemic.

Good luck to you. Me too (blood + passion, both sports) but now I can't stand RU , the institution, because of its history, and RU, the sport, because its technically and tactically impoverished.

So what do you make of the use of the public education system to promote union over league?

Whats your stance on the banning of rugby league in France by the collaboraters with the Nazis?

What do you make of the Fiji rugby union ringing radio stations posing as league officials and cancelling games, or changing the locks on the access ways to grounds so league matches can't go ahead, or changing the locks on changing room doors so league teams can't use them?

What do you make of the South African RU in late fifties using there power in local government to take all grounds off rugby league?

This is what you call hate isn't it? Or are going to do what your mate Elli and SteveM and co do and say none of this really happened.

Funny how you never post in the rugby league section unless your defending union Te Kaha.....but you say you support both codes....just not rugby league in public.

Do you need help finding your way back home to the union section?

Your dad didn't need to know anything about cricket, just veing there to watch his kid play is what was important.

Man when i think of the Km's my parents put in taking me to cricket or league matches when i was a kid.....every kids deserves parents like that. To give my dad credit he even came along to watch when i had a crack at union a few years ago....even though he's a league man to the bone much like his son.

No one is trying to say who people can and can't follow. At the end of the day it's each to their own. For some people it's simply a case of "it's my country playing and I'll always support them whenever they play and whatever they play". Others can see the bad blood that has flowed primarily from Union to League in the last century or so and have formed their opinion accordingly. Union have practised sporting arartheid which no other sport has ever had to endure for so long. Let's not think it still doesn't go on to this day even though the charade of amateurism has been removed from Union. Union clubs in various parts of the world still pull dirty tricks to sabotage League enthusiasts. The $64,000 is why? I can only think that Union KNOWS we have a far superior game that, but for the constraints placed upon it by themselves, would be the second most popular football code in the world and daylight would be third.
