Mansour,DWZ and Edwards to carry our pack for the first 3 tackles then maybe 1 good run from Yeo or RCG. Then young Nathan normally gets tackled on the 4th. Then......

Pretty much. His plan is fast play the balls, direct running.... and um, I’m sure that’s enough.

The way the game is played these days every side does pretty much the same bringing it back from kick's downfield. Yes the first three plays are the fullback, wingers bringing the ball back that is the way it is. We seem to do that part of the game as well as most. It is what happens after the first three tackles that we seem to struggle with. I think it is harsh to overly criticise Nathan Cleary for getting caught in possession late in the tackle count. Certainly frustrating but it is not the kids fault but more of a game management/tactics/game plan issue as opposed to laying blame upon Nathan.

That's why we are talking about it in Griffin's thread.

Regardless of the thread I agree with you. Just as frustrated as you and everyone else on here about our lack of attacking options deep in enemy territory. Is it just an Anthony Griffin issue, overall coaching staff issue, inexperience or it's probably just a combination of a lot of factors. While we may not want to accept it but perhaps our side overall isn't quite as good as we think they are or are capable off. I don't know!!!! For what's it worth I think we remain one or two quality players short of being a real top four side. It is certainly open to debate about which positions we need more quality I tend to think we need another quality centre and a speedy hooker/dummy half who can threaten the line running from dummy half.

Completely agree about hooker. A bit of speed in running and service to the halves/forwards will lift this team to another level on it's own. Surprising what a bit of extra time can do for a team.

Also, using the support play of Edwards would help - he is always in support when we roll up field, but he very, very rarely gets the ball - we simply do not value injecting the fullback around the ruck at all.

There seems to be a plan until we get into our opponents 20 metre zone and then the wheels fall off.

Does anyone maybe consider that this is why we are contemplating a Maloney/Moylan swap???

Griffin has stated all year that it is a problem for us.

Yes, it's a problem because Griffin doesn't know what the f**k he is doing in that respect. It would make sense that he would hope that the players would figure it out for him. Rotating through halves hoping that someone can cover for his ineptitude is a plan, I guess.

This is something that the 03/04 Panthers side did brilliantly. Wesser was always lurking. We had Gower and Presto who could go to the line. Waterhouse would run a line with them and Wesser on the inside. Defense was in 3 or 4 minds.

Will Gower;
1. Promote the ball? (Start process again 1-4)
2. Dummy and run?
3. Hit Waterhouse?
4. Turn the ball back on the inside to Wesser?

Make a mistake in your positioning or defensive read and that team would make you pay.

If the option was 3. (Waterhouse) they would be confronted by a quick powerful runner who could offload...often back to Wesser who was still lurking.

The above is why I value a Supporting/running fullback more than a ball playing one, he gives all his other players around him more options and poses more questions to the defense...this was something that Wesser (and Gordon when given the chance) had that Moylan was sorely missing at fullback.

My above example is also something that the Elliot/IC/Griffin Panthers were/are missing. We didn't/don't pose multiple threat vectors in attack where it counts. It was 1 out stuff or double threat option that was either obvious to read or easy to counter defensively. Our attack over the last decade has depended on pure individual brilliance from players like Jennings, Lewis, Pritchard etc.

The reason it was lacking (apart from Hook's coaching)was our players who offload didn't play well or play at all Merrin,Latu,Carty. Adding Kikau should help and Yeo should be working on it over the offseason

The memberships team keep ringing me about renewing.

Until the merry go round with Moylan and the coach sorts itself out I'm not going to pay the club a cent.

I think you'll find it's stopped. Pretty sure he's gone.

Young/inexperienced halves was one of our main issues last year and one of the few outside Griffins direct control. He'll have had this squad for 3 years by the end of next year and Maloney adds a ton of the experience we've lacked. No excuses now.

Personally I think the Moylan/Maloney swap is a beneficial deal for us. My opinion only as most disagree was Moylan was best suited to the fullback role. Given the emergence of Dylan Edwards and the lack of options for us in the halves Moylan was sorta forced into the role. He does not possess a kicking game, yes the occasional short grubber into the in goal may come off from time to time, but generally he cannot kick pure and simple. The deficiency alone basically means he is not suited to playing in the halves.

Like we all do, I have reservations about coach Anthony Griffin. I don't for one minute think he is to blame for all our woes but I remain unconvinced he is the right person for us going forward. Season 2018 will be defining for him in terms of our future and his own. Despite what has been said here by many our squad remains good and the younger players in it should be better for the past two finals appearances. If we have a little good fortune with injury there is no reason to doubt we can improve on what we have achieved in 2016/2017.
