Some actual real analysis in the media is so rare. So Girdler actually watches our games and has a memory unlike the other dumb f**ks in the media who piss out their hot takes in line with whatever narrative is being sold that hour. Hooper too from the questions he was asking obviously has a clue beyond the superficial "doesn't May and Cleary look so good."

It was a good point Girdler made, though he could have made it more forcefully, we are the least deceptive team with the ball in the league, and that can't be anything other than a reflection on the coaching.

I thought he was pretty forceful. He seemed genuinely angry.

As a Broncos supporter I feel your pain with Griffin. Good lower grade coach but seems to struggle in the NRL. Griffin coached teams often look lost in attack when they hit the 20 m line.

Girds didn't hold back. One of the few in the media who is willing to call out the myth that is Griffin's coaching ability.

But Gus will give a comment like that a hear no evil, see no evil response and will be very proud to announce a contract extension sometime in the off-season.

Coach Anthony Griffin gives Penrith Panthers a pass mark

PENRITH coach Anthony Griffin has described his side’s season as “really good” despite the pre-season premiership favourites crashing out in the second week of the finals.

The Panthers lost 13-6 to Brisbane on Friday night after being bundled out in the corresponding match last season. While plenty of pundits predicted the Panthers to lift the premiership trophy for the first time since 2003, Griffin has always distanced himself from forecasting a title.
“I thought it was really good,” Griffin said of his season. “I would love to be still playing. Still need a couple of days to sit back and look through. I thought it was a really growth year for us as a club.

“We played tougher football this year against quality opposition. Last year with our run into the finals we probably picked off a few sides that were never going to be in the finals. We were playing well.

“This year we had to earn our spot there and had to win away to Canberra and New Zealand under pressure with a lot of people out of our side. Everyone we played in the back end of the year were playing for their position.

“I thought it was a real build on what we did last year … The hype didn’t come from us, that was external.”
Injuries and off-field issues plagued the Panthers at times this year, who managed to cling on to a top eight spot. Skipper Matt Moylan’s future remains unresolved with Griffin saying his absence was not a reason for their premature exit.

“I don’t think [we missed Moylan in key moments],” Griffin said. “We had a team out there that was capable of doing the job and when you’re playing semi-finals football you have one or two opportunities and that was the difference.

“We have no control over (Moylan speculation). Our club have been upfront and spoken about it. It’s a process that our player is going through. We care for him and we’ve put him through that process. That’s all I can tell you about it.

Panthers rookie five-eighth Tyrone May looks to have ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament which will rule him out of representing Samoa at the end of year World Cup.

“You never like to see young players get injured, particularly young guys like him who have just started their NRL career but we’ve got great medical staff,” Griffin said. “We’ll care for him. He’ll work hard and get his body right. He’s got a long career in front of him.”

I am sorry Griffin but you did miss Moylan in key moments. Whether he was ready to play or not.To beat the best teams you need your best players out there with a good gameplan. We had neither the other night.
Our attack was clueless and Moylan playing at his best, would have provided a lot more attacking options and asked a lot more questions in the Broncos defense. If he wasn't ready to play then the as girds has illustrated the gameplan should have been different. Brisbane were ready for us the other night.
I not saying the club should have rushed him back if he wasn't ready but we lost on Friday because we missed our best player and our gameplan sucked. For 60 minutes all the gameplan seemed to be was put up a bomb. We had a big chance against the Broncs to win going into the match but blew it.
That has to change in the off season.
If there is a personal problem between coach and player. Find common ground and build a bridge and get over it. lets start getting the best out of these players.

Ofcourse Griffin gives us a pass. He thought this side was incapable of winning the competition and said anyone who thought otherwise knew nothing about football.

He said we had any easy run last year and that we improved this year. Is he f**king kidding himself? We won against even shittier opposition this year FFS. At no point did ww reach the heights we reached last year.

Yes we made it just as far. But the team took a huge step backwards in many areas. Having no game plan stands out when we can dominate games and not score points. We had the worst success rate in the opposition red zone of any team in the competition. The closer we got the less dangerous we were.

When Griffin is re-signed we can be certain we aren't winning a competition. We have a small window with a roster capable of doing so and its going to be wasted under a coach who doesnt even believe in his own team. We were not far off a grand final without a game plan at all. Give us a decent coach with structure and we could bery easily have been there.

Girds summed it up.

I think our season was masked by the poor quality of the football being played in 2017. Our attack under Griffin has never been too flash and we got away with it long enough to make week 2 of the finals.

I think a pass mark is about right. It's true that we went backwards in some areas, but the team also went forward in others. We showed a ton of heart and will in the back half of the season, won a ton of really intense games and defensively we seem much better. Some players went backwards, but others went forwards. Having juniors constantly stream through and more than get the job done is extremely pleasing and I think there's an understanding of what out title winning spine will end up being. The second half of the year deserves as much praise as the first half deserves condemnation. When key players have personal issues like Matt and Bryce (TMM rumours notwithstanding) there's always going to be some disruption.

Bear in mind a pass isn't a distinction to me. A pass isn't awarded for a title. It's just a pass. I think the coaching situation needs to change as much as anyone else, be that help for Griffin or a wholesale change. I think the former makes more sense given how the season played out.

Also got no problem with Griffin bullshitting in saying missing Moylan wasn't an issue. Telling the truth serves no purpose other than to heap more pressure on a dude that's already struggling. Blunt speech isn't a virtue for someone in Griffins position.

Being a coach and leader is more than just picking a team and deciding on attacking plays and defensive plays. Knowing how to motivate people and getting the best from them is a crucial skill and saying we missed Moylan in a public forum serves no purpose whatsoever. How would Moylan feel about that? How would players who tried their hardest in his absence feel? Of course we missed our captain and star player, if we didn't then he is a waste of cap space.

Stating the bleeding obvious is not required here and I think he did the right thing.

Well that's lucky because out those three things all Griffin does is pick the team. Our attacking and defensive structures are garbage, we do not have any attacking set plays after 2 years.

Mate you can't just dismiss the hospital passes to CHN and Yeo as non set plays. We have put 2 years into those

Hahaha sorry forgot about those ones.

Blind freddy could see that Moga was rushing in and a simple out the back play down that side with CHN running a hard decoy would blow Brisbane wide open. I think we tried it once and Edwards gave himself no space(to flat surprise surprise) so the ball didn't get past him and resulted in a turnover.

Im so f**king happy guys like Girdler and Freddy are starting to question and flat out bag our tactics. Both these guys have been critical of us all year but its getting more attention now.

I think if Edwards had 2 legs that out the back ball would have been better. Completely agree with you though and definitely glad the issues are going mainstream so the club can't hide behind making week 2 of the finals.

Besides the fact we were so flat the rest of the play was poorly executed, CHN didn't run the decoy well and the timing was out, it was obvious we were going out the back as soon as Cleary got the ball.
