Anthony Quinn - defensive specialist?

The only reason I can think they went with Anthony Quinn is that he has some dirt on Inglis or Falou ...???

Just before Inglis or Falou jump for a bomb, he might say something about their girlfriend's mother to put them off. It's the only tactic to defuse Qld bombs to his wing I can think of. Good luck.

NSW doesn't need to have someone in the team with dirt on Inglis and Folau they've got the Storm coach as their coach.

Look at his average metres, hit ups, tackles/mistackles and tries scored. Also - if you do watch our games - look at the way he comes in and closes the attacking play down, nearly every time.

Per Game stats

Quinn:
Hit ups 11.2
Metres 86.1
Tackles 9.9
misses 1.8

(random winger)
Tautai:
Hit ups 14.3
Metres 123.4
Tackles 6.1
misses 1.7

It's 5 tries to 1 in favour of Quinn - but you wonder how much that's a part of playing for the Storm as opposed to the incompetent Eels.

(random winger 2)
Josh Morris:
Hit ups 13.5
Metres 110.5
Tackles 9.5
misses 1.5

2 tries - see above but insert 'Dragons' instead of eels (that and 3 more games for Quinn)

I haven't picked regular first grade players - both these guys have been dropped this season - but it clearly shows that the hype surrounding Quinn is a bit much.
Matty Johns calls Quinn "the best dummy half runner in the game" - Josh Morris and Taulima Tautai clearly show that's a load of codswallop.

In terms of defence, well, the stats are hard to read in that regard, but he's not exactly setting the world alight with his 1.8 missed tackles per contest.

You just wonder what a guy like Luke Rooney (7.3 tackles only 0.8 misses) is feeling when he gets overlooked for a 'defensive specialist' who can't defend, and is seriously outsized by the hulking Folau, or outpaced by the swift Tate. And then there are the Joel Monaghans of the world - who have the pace, size and form on the board to seriously warrant selection...

IMO best wingers in terms of yardage this year are Vatuvei, Kenny-Dowall and Nightingale. Three very talented Kiwi's. Not to mention that Perrett is making huge yardage as a utility back too, & Soliola, Sa, Inu & Matai are all capable of plenty of metres too.

NZ don't need Webb. They have 8 quality backs right there.

You've just identified yourself and a deadset idiot.

Its all about execution. The Storm play an up and in defence. They get up in their opponents faces. But the point is not that the Storm employ this tactic (cause any moron knows they do, as you pointed out) - its how Quinn executes it thats important.

Matt King rarely missed tackles when he rushed up. Anthony Quinn, after struggling to find his feet last year - where he was prone to the wrong decision here or there - is now superb, at rushing in, and closing them down ball and all.

Others that struggle for the Storm are Will Chambers and Matt Geyer (still).

Do you watch football? Most of the beauty of the defensive pattern, which isn't up and in... is when the wingers are caught out. Have a watch next time they miss what happens behind the line.

This isn't going to be executed in the first origin game.

To whoever whinged about us not being selectors... well we couldn't do any worse could we.

Did most of last years team suddenly get sh*t? Or is this year's an admission of fault from the selectors who last year chose probably the worst ever NSW team.

Aside from one try to Brent Tate scored on his wing, his game was f*cking flawless. He outscored all those "superstar" QLD backs... and put in some brutal tackles that forced errors.

I have no doubt that Craig Bellamy was the reason for NSW getting up and us knowing exactly how to stop the QLD backs. But still... Quinn had a brilliant game and really proved the doubters wrong.

BTW, i'm not a Storm supporter, so this isn't a biased post.

Quinnie did good, Bellamy was probably the best player NSW had tonight and he wasn't even on the field.

f**king awesome game, he smashed them and his timing was immaculate. A couple of his hits were on the side of the field I was on and they were as good live as they looked on TV.

Eric Grothe, watch that game over and over again to see how its done.

gotta love Quinnie, I hope there's very little changes to last night's side but I don't see why the selectors would want to mess with a winning formula.

Played an excellent game.

Will be interesting to see if he is as polished if Prince is selected as his up and in defence copied by Cooper could leak like a sieve against a kicking game either side of the ruck

Apart from a few big hits, I thought his defence was pretty awful tbh... got found out a couple of times way way way out of position. Still not convinced.

Probably the best game i've ever seen him play. Was great in both attack and defence. Lets hope that the experience of Origin makes him a better player in the future for the Storm.

if that's possible, he's been pretty good this year, playing Origin did Snake(Brett Stewart) good last year.

I thought he played extremely well but i dont think QLD threw much at them, and what little they did throw at quinn it was ridiculously predictable
id like to see how he goes on the wing when a lockyer or prince is partnering Thurston in the halves, in which case QLD would offer ALOT more in attack

the hunt to 5/8th gamble was a bad one... QLD showed zero creativity or imagination wiht ball in hand.
