It seems like a while since we have heard any bit of news from Serbia, and i just searched back 7 pages and couldn't find a topic about them (unless I missed it). Is there anyone in the know who can give us an update?

Thanks.

The last story on their website was from about a week ago and was about their award winners from 2010 being named. Soni Radovanovic won the main award and they gave out a bunch of others.

SERBIAN KICK OFF SIGNALS EXPANSIONIST AIMS
24th March 2011
The tenth Serbian Championship kicked off on Saturday 19th March 2011 with first-round matches between champions Rugby League Club Dorcol and Rugby League Club Radnicki from Nova Pazova. The champion Spiders started strongly, quickly breaking the resistance of the young Rugby League Club Radnicki outfit. Dorcol won at a canter, 60:6, and announced the fierce title ambitions. The following day was not so routine, with Rugby League Club Car Lazar, after a 200 km trip to Belgrade from their home town, Krusevac, beating last year’s runners up Red Star Belgrade 12-6.

The decade edition of the Serbian Championship has seen a re-shuffle by the SRLF. Clubs are divided into first division - Dorcol, Red Star, Radnicki and Car Lazar – and second division clubs - Stari Grad, Nis, Morava and Soko. Former title threat Rugby League Club Podbara from Novi Sad has decided to develop youth players only for the time being. The club’s new leadership has already initiated the young players and on Sunday 13 March 2011 played a friendly match with the Nova Pazova junior clubs.

Nebojsa Sretenovic, president of the SRLF, said in a statement:

“The new format of the competition fits our Development Strategy 2011-2014. We plan to expand the first division with one club from the second division every year to create stable and strong clubs. We expect that next season our first division will have five teams, while the second division will remain at four teams; Rugby League Club Podbara will take the place of the promoted club in the second division. This plan will give us nine clubs in 2012.“

Belgrade has been chosen to host three of the six matches in October's World Cup European zone qualifying competition.

Italy, Russia, Lebanon and Serbia will be vying to join Scotland and Tonga in group C of the main tournament, which will be staged in England and Wales in the autumn of 2013.

The mini tournament kicks off with the first-ever international between the Azzuri and the Russians in Padova on October 15 and culminates in a double-header in Belgrade a fortnight later.

Rugby League European Federation general manager Danny Kazandjian said: "The European zone qualifiers present an opportunity for one of the competing nations to take their organisation onto the next level and, with no discernible favourite, I look forward to an exciting October."

With home advantage in two of their three fixtures, improving Serbia will fancy their chances of booking their place in the main draw.

Former Great Britain international Lee Crooks, Serbia's technical director, said: "It is a very tough qualifying group but we have the self-belief that we can overcome the challenge ahead and show the rugby league world that the game in Serbia is getting stronger each year."

Qualifying fixtures:

October 15: Italy v Russia (Padova).

October 16: Lebanon v Serbia (Tripoli).

October 22: Russia v Lebanon (Vereya).

October 23: Serbia v Italy (Belgrade).

October 29: Serbia v Russia, Italy v Lebanon (Belgrade).

Scotland and Tonga and one of these qualifiers in one WC group! When were these groups named? And why have they chosen such a weak one?

The groups have been out ages, probably 6 months or so.

The group is weaker as there's 2 strong pools of 4 (with 3 to the quarterfinals) and 2 weak pools of 3 (with 1 to the quarterfinals)

The reports don't mention the University competition with 5 teams is also under way.

SRLF is working hard on entrenching the sport. The main goal is to raise the quality of the comp - that's why there are two divisions now.

PS: Jankuloski: The site looks great, any idea when the English section will be ready?

To be quite honest, it's not a priority.. People from other countries are much more likely to seek news from Serbia on this forum then by the site. Google translate also enables people to get most of it if they really want to.

Our organisation is small and resources are stretched. More important things are being sorted out - junior development, stabilizing new clubs in southern Serbia, securing finance for the national team.

No point in making the website in english if we can't have someone regularly updating it.

^ that's the response i expected. it's good to see that the priority list is in order. I just thought since the likes of yourself and some of the other Serbia RL guys seem to know flawless english, that someone may have done it by now.

Wow, great to hear! Thanks for the update!

It's nice to see such a good geographical spread of the game already, some teams are having to travel big distances there just to play a match. Nice to see the universities involved too.

The Dutch team withdrew due to the Czech tournament changing the competition day from saturday to sunday which made it very difficult for guys to attend.
A number of the selected players can not play sundays due to their religious beliefs.
Some representatives from the NRLB still made the effort to travel to Pardubice to forge links with the teams involved.

Poor from the RLEF as the Photo is Damian Seibold from the game last summer! Its a shame there was miscommunication as this served neither team much use really. A number of new faces including Tim Redmacher who plays for Cambridge Uni. Andrew Hoggins another student from Lippstadt near Hannover showed up well according to reports. Nico Koch made a good return from an injury in Rugby Union-he has missed 6 months due to a shoulder problem.
