Kaon, Newton-Raphson Method, Maclaurin series, these are two phrases used in the solution to puzzle 4. I don't know what they teach in Aussie but thats not someting I ever came across in high school.

Here is a similar type problem I think I can remember:

John drives his car from point A to point B at 50 km/h. How fast would he have to drive back to point A to average 100 km/h for the round trip?

Instantaneously....

BOOYAH!!!

Mathematically:

Let x be the distance travelled
t1 be the time from A to B
t2 the total time
and T the time from B to A

x/t1 =50 (a)
2x/t2 = 100 (b)

(b)/(a)

2xt1/xt2 = 100/50

therefore t1/t2 = 1

t2 = t1 +T

so

t1 = t1 + T

Therefore T = 0

So for Velocity it is the integral of the distance with respect to time or more simply

Distance/time

and time is zero so the answer is the speed is infinite.

I'm not a Civil Engineer for nothing. And Maths has always been my favourite subject. Was planning on doing a Science/Maths course at Uni but what career would I get? School Teacher. :?
