Are Painkillers Performance Enhancing Drugs?

Not taking anything away from Cooper Cronk's unique performance in last night's GF, but this question has to be asked.

If Cronk did not have painkilling injections before and during the game, he would have been a complete passenger if he played. By having those four jabs, he was able to undertake most tasks that we are used to seeing from him.

Technically, his performance was enhanced.

They hardly enhance anything.

They enhanced him that without them he could not play otherwise.

But......

They are used by all footballers during the year. So why is the op using Cronk’s case in isolation other than he is deluded how much pain killing injections are being used by footballers throughout the year?

More like performance levelling than performance enhancing. You cannot say that he played better than when he was 100% fit.

Also, if he took the same painkillers if he was 100% fit, his performance would not improve one ioata.
Maybe they are performance enabling?

Now that's something to think about.

Point taken but do you know what other players throughout the year used painkillers?

Honestly I can't name one other than Cronk. Only because it was in probably the highest profile match of year?

OK. Name them and in what round were they needled up.

Talk to any NRL player and they’ll tell you by round 25 at least half the side is getting pricked somewhere. Ankles, knees, and shoulders the most common.

WADA laws seems to draw the line at drugs that are purely used for pain relief/numbing as being legal.

Once you get into a drug that has actual healing effects they tend to take more notice.

If you were going to bring up a currently legal injection that is more dicey IMO it would be cortison injections. That’s a type of steroid and reduces inflammation, so actually helps speed up recovery. Much more of a grey area than simple pain killers

Is tape around the knee or shoulder performance enhancing? What about joint reconstructions?

It's a medical treatment. A requirement for the athlete to function.

The most intelligent response so far.

Seriously?
Ok I'll give you a couple.

Jack DeBelin used them a couple of times through the year, including the rounds before SOO and during the finals.

Robbie Farah in March had painkiller injections.

Adam Reynolds played with painkillers during the Finals.

Andrew McCullough received injections throughout the season.
