I’m glad the whole Manly pride jersey thing has been raised on here, it’s had me pretty fired up this week.
The thing that bothers me the most about it is the players are making it about them. The jersey is about recognising part of our community yet the players decide they need to turn it into a thing about their right not to wear it. It’s not like they’ve even been asked to say anything about it. Wearing the jersey doesn’t mean you have to denounce your religion or give up your faith or anything like that.
Personally I’m not religious, but it’s like if I get invited to a friend’s wedding at a church. Would I boycott the wedding because it doesn’t fit my personal beliefs and views? No way! Because I know it’s about them, not about me. I’ll happily stand there in the church listening to the priest do his/her thing and I might even say amen when the time comes but the whole ceremony is about other people not about me and I can go home at the end of the day knowing I was there for them.
What if one of their teammates came out as gay? Would these players refuse to play with them? Would they refuse to be in the changing rooms with them? Like how far does this go?
Simply put, this is sort of like saying “I’m not coming to work today because I don’t like the uniform” and I’ve seen people trying to counter that with “they shouldn’t be forced to wear anything they don’t want to” well guess what, most workplaces have a uniform or some sort of dress code or guideline and if you don’t like it then see you later. If you work in a corporate office and turn up in shorts and singlet, bye-bye! If you’re in the military but disagree with the uniform, sorry you’re not longer serving your country. If you work at red rooster and don’t like to wear the shirt with a chicken logo on it because you’re scared of birds, you’re out on your arse! I really don’t see how playing professional sport is any different. When you sign on to play (and get paid ridiculous money to do it) you realise that you need to fall into line with not just the uniform but whatever the club wants to represent.
Homophobia is homophobia whether it’s religious in nature or not, and here in Australia in 2022 it should be completely unacceptable.
