Peachey almost lost plot
By James Hooper
July 29, 2004
CRONULLA fullback David Peachey has revealed how a momentary loss of hunger for the game because of personal issues almost cost him his career with the Sharks.
Peachey, 30, ended months of speculation about possibly being cut loose by Cronulla when he re-signed with the Sharks for another season earlier this month.
The one-time NSW Origin fullback will make his first appearance in eight weeks against Brisbane on Sunday after finally overcoming a torn quadriceps muscle.
"I never wanted to leave the Sharks but there was a lack of communication between all of us," Peachey said.
"From a player's point of view I found it a little tough in that there was no communication. I probably gave the club a bit of a mixed message by taking seven days or 10 days or whatever it was at the start of the season to sort out some personal things.
"Because I'm down here by myself it was a matter of me getting home and talking to my family and making sure I was making the right decisions about my life.
"But when I did speak to Steve Rogers and Stuart Raper about it they assured me they wanted to keep me which was good news.
"I've never been off contract with the Sharks and I just found it a little difficult being at the age barrier of 30.
"It's been my most turbulent year."
Peachey was approached by the New Zealand Warriors who were keen to lure him across the Tasman if they failed to secure the services of Steve Price or Ruben Wiki.
But, from Peachey's perspective, he always wanted to remain at Cronulla, where he has been for the past 11 seasons, to try to win a premiership with the Sharks.
"Andrew Ettingshausen played for the club for a long time and went very close but I would like to go one better," Peachey said.
"The club has recruited really well and I honestly feel like there is something special building here."
Peachey said he would reassess whether to continue playing in 2006 midway through next year.
