Corey Norman v Matt Dufty v Gareth Widdop: Why Dragons recruit is no guarantee for fullback

St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor faces a welcome backline headache in 2019 following the club’s acquisition of Corey Norman.
The talented five-eighth or fullback will join the Dragons on a three-year deal from next season in a move that will strengthen the Red V’s attack.

The biggest question mark that lingers is how the backline will now look.

“Straight away, there will be speculation around the position he’ll play and that’ll be up to the coach,” Dragons recruitment boss Ian Millward said.

Round 1
“We feel Corey as a quality player will give Paul an opportunity to work with some really outstanding talent.”

Some are tipping Norman to take over the No.1 jumper, leaving incumbent Matt Dufty facing the prospect of reserve grade or a positional switch.

But Dragons skipper Gareth Widdop also has some experience in the custodian role from his time playing for Melbourne and England.

So who is best suited to the role?

Numbers provided by Fox Sports Lab show that particularly in the battle between Norman and Dufty, the latter should feel hard done by to lose his spot.

The former Brisbane and Parramatta star has intermittently started at fullback throughout his career for a total of 32 games.

In those matches, it’s clear Norman has been relied on for his ballplaying, having 34.3 possessions per game.

He’s managed to notch up a total of 19 linebreak assists, 13 try assists, 13 offloads, 10 linebreaks and 89 tackle busts.

His running game has also been strong with 14.7 runs per game for an average of 130 metres.

MATT DUFTY

The young livewire has only appeared at fullback in his 33-game NRL career, starting on 32 occasions — he came off the bench in Round 24 this year against Canterbury.

It’s no secret speed is Dufty’s main attribute and he’s burned more than one opponent to date.

Because of that blistering pace, he trumps Norman when it comes to tackle busts (126) and linebreaks (24). He also edges out his new teammate in try assists with 15.

Another important area where Dufty comes out in top is his ability to find the tryline, and he’s done so on 19 occasions to Norman’s three.

Dufty’s possessions are much lower with 21.4 per game, while his runs (10.8) and metres (113) are lower than Norman. His linebreak assists (14) are also lower.

GARETH WIDDOP

The Englishman has started at fullback in just six NRL games and a further five at international level, so his statisitics are limited.

He also played a host of games in the No.1 jumper in through the junior grades, and it was in the 2009 Under 20s grand final where he helped the Storm to a title with two tries.

Across his top level games, Widdop, like Norman, has clearly been more of a playmaker with 33.1 possessions per game.

He’s scored five tries and set up another six, along with six linebreaks, 10 linebreak assists and 34 tackle busts.

While his numbers are hard to compare to the other fullback contenders, his ballplaying figures are arguably more impressive in his international games compared to the NRL which also highlights his development as a player.

A hard-running forward with sheer tenacity, Blake Lawrie enjoyed a brilliant 2018 season which saw the Dragons forward make nine first-grade appearances following his NRL debut in 2017.

Lawrie has been touted as one of the rising stars in recent years with selection in the NSW Under 18's squad in 2015 before earning a place in the Under 20's side and Australian Schoolboys squad in 2017.

He was later rewarded with a place in Brad Fittler's Emerging Blue Squad – a clear acknowledgement of his strong form throughout 2018 with the potential to go to greater heights next season.

He played a crucial role in the club's Intrust Super Premiership surge towards the Preliminary Final, averaging 146m and 34 tackles per game throughout the season and formed as a core part of the Dragons forward pack in both grades.

He proved invaluable throughout the Origin period in the absence of NSW stars Paul Vaughan, Tariq Sims and Jack de Belin, with his efforts in the top grade more than admirable and adds quality depth to the Dragons for 2019.

He has a great chance to cement a spot in the Dragons top 17 next season, and with limitless potential, will undoubtedly become a household name in the near future.

19 stars for 2019 | Reece Robson

Wed 26 Dec 2018, 06:01 AM

For the past three years, Reece Robson has owned a junior NSW No.9 jersey.

He was the NSW Under-18s hooker in 2016, before being picked as the Under-20s hooker in 2017/18. He finished the year as the Junior Kangaroos hooker that completed a long list of junior representative achievements.

To go along with that, he made his NRL debut for the St George Illawarra Dragons this year, and was also named as the Intrust Super Premiership NSW Hooker of the Year.

Cameron McInnes is currently the permanent hooker at the Dragons, but Robson could soon prove to be a wonderful headache for coach Paul McGregor. Both of the hookers were selected in Brad Fittler’s Emerging Blues squad, and should they both stay the talented pair will be pushing each other for that starting spot in time.

“He’s a big, tough, rugged player,” Fittler said of Robson in 2016 when he played in the NSW Under-18s.

“He can play a bit of lock forward too, he’s really strong and he’s very experienced in playing against older people.”

Mal Meninga praised Robson in The Daily Telegraph recently, saying he’s the type of player he would welcome to the Gold Coast Titans.

Nice little piece from A. Webster.......

Andrew Webster’s fearless sporting predictions for 2019

Andrew Webster29 December 2018 — 12:50pm

Hey you! How’s your Christmas going? Tummy hurt from eating too much ham? Ready to get medieval on certain members of your extended family? Yearning for a simpler time of Richie, Bill and Tony Greig’s WeatherWall?

Well, cry me a river because some of us are still at work, slaving away over a hot MacBook, trying to come up with vaguely entertaining copy for you to read during the holiday period.

With that in mind, indulge me, if you will, as I run you through some of the big storylines as I see it for 2019.

BENNY AND THE REST
The truth, they say, is the first casualty of war. Truth took a bullet in rugby league a long time ago.

We were assured Anthony Griffin wasn’t leaving Penrith, Ivan Cleary wasn’t leaving Wests Tigers to join the Panthers, Trent Barrett didn’t want out of Manly, Wayne Bennett would see out his final season at Brisbane and Anthony Seibold wasn’t talking to the Broncos about anything. At all.

On the wane?: Of all the big years Wayne Bennett has had, THIS year at Souths will be his biggest.CREDIT:AAP

Oh, and Shane Flanagan had nothing to worry about.

Four sides from last season’s top eight have new coaches and that makes the 2019 premiership rather tricky to predict.

All eyes will be on Bennett. He’ll have a point to prove and has a team capable of winning the comp. If it starts to unravel, though, it will be pass-the-popcorn stuff.

Away from the field, the game’s reputation will continue to be battered as sexual assault cases involving Jarryd Hayne and Jack de Belin play out in the courts for much of the season. Terrible stuff.

Fearless prediction: The Dragons win the premiership, Blues nail Queensland 3-0, Peter Beattie is punted by the end of the year.

Weekly club-land teams were named, Origin and Test squads were named and Dally M medallists have also been named but now it's time for NRL Social Team of the Year to be announced.

Here is a list of players who have been the most active in providing entertainment in the social sphere across 2018.

NRL social media team of the year

Fullback – Kalyn Ponga

The Newcastle Knights fullback showed off his photography skills with some epic pics of his day-to-day adventures, shots of time he's spent with people in the community and a beautiful photo of his date to the Dally M Awards.

Winger – Josh Addo-Carr

A proud Wiradjuri and Yarrabah man who's always down for a laugh. If the Fox didn't post a selfie showing off his tats, he shared with the world photos of his loved ones.

Centre – Latrell Mitchell

Rugby league sure did flood the Roosters centre's 2018 calendar, with many highlights from his debut year in the NSW and Kangaroos squads. But amongst the madness Mitchell made sure to give his No.1 fan, his baby girl Inala, plenty of love throughout the year.

Centre – Isabelle Kelly

If Isabelle Kelly wasn't fending off opponents for meat pies, she was in the gym on the grind or on holidays getting engaged.

Winger – Josh Mansour

The Panthers winger played an active role in a number of community initiatives this year. He also enjoyed the special time he got to spend with his baby daughter Siana and beautiful wife Daniella.

Five-eighth – Ali Brigginshaw

It was a year filled with success for the Brisbane Broncos, Queensland and Jillaroos five-eighth, and she spent those highs with her gorgeous girlfriend Kate.

Halfback – Adam Reynolds

Footy, family and his mates were at the heart of the South Sydney halfback's 2018.

Front Row – Joe Ofahengaue

The Broncos prop had great pride in representing Tonga once again in this year's Test against Australia, while he was also inspired by the courage shown by his beautiful girlfriend Sofi who is battling cancer.

Hooker – Nathan Peats

When the Titans jokester isn't putting his mates on show, he's making the most of some precious time spent with his two sons Leyton and Harlen-Reign and gorgeous fiancé Jade.

Front Row – Sam Thaiday

From playing dress-ups to pool parties to making videos – it's no secret that the former Broncos front-rower's two daughters are at the front and centre of his world.

Second Row – Kezie Apps

Footy, injury, rehab and more footy made up the Dragons second-rower's 2018. But each time the NRLW and Jillaroos star got knocked down she fought her way back to be bigger, better and stronger.

Second Row – Joel Thompson

He inspires many with his commitment to making a change in the community – leading the way in the mental health space with the support of his two daughters Imi and Isla and beautiful wife Samy.

Lock – Jason Taumalolo

You feel nothing but pride when you look through the Cowboys enforcer's social account, knowing he was the instigator of several high-profile players switching their national allegiance to Tonga.

Interchange – Josh Reynolds

There were no nerves from the Wests Tigers playmaker when he switched clubs or suited up in a teletubbies costume but when it came to the gender reveal of his twins, emotions where flying high.

Interchange – Jess Sergis

If the Dragons centre isn't posting up cute photos with her boo Zac Lomax, she's showing off her strength in the gym or enjoying the ocean.

Interchange – Victor Radley

If the Roosters utility forward wasn't down at the beach catching some waves with his mates, you could find him over in Fiji lending a helping hand to the locals as a part of Clint Newton's Transformers Program.

Interchange – Cameron King

During his time at the Eels, the hooker produced plenty of laughs, as well as positive messages he would spread throughout his work in the community.

Notable mention – Dragons Bus

One of the best examples of bromance in the NRL this year was The Dragons Bus, which carted around a dozen players to and from training each day – providing laughs, karaoke and unforgettable memories.
