While Josh Dugan will most likely be the man to start the 2017 season at fullback for the St George Illawarra Dragons, Holden Cup graduate Matt Dufty is waiting in the wings to help the Red V address their recent attacking struggles.

Only the Knights (305) scored fewer points than the Dragons (341) in 2016, with the Red V making it back-to-back seasons as the second-lowest scoring team in the competition following their 435-point haul in 2015.

One man who has no problems finding the line is Dufty, who finished his NYC career as the leading try-scorer in the competition's history with 55 from 65 appearances in the famous red and white jersey.

With 23 tries and 22 try assists last season, as well as 11 tries and 18 assists in 2015, Dufty could be the attacking spark the Dragons need to fight their way back into the Telstra Premiership top eight.

The Junior Blues fullback – who also earned a spot on the bench in the NYC Team of the Year – forewent several opportunities to play in the Intrust Super Premiership last season to focus on his Holden Cup duties, but said he'd be willing to spend some time in reserve grade to gain some experience against more-seasoned opposition in 2017.

While Dufty would love to don the No.1 jersey from the get-go next year, the youngster knows Dugan will get first crack if he chooses to remain at fullback rather than entertain a move to the centres.

"The goal is to play NRL next year. I might not start the year there, but hopefully as the year goes on I'll get a few games," Dufty told NRL.com.

"I had a talk to Mary (Dragons coach Paul McGregor) about it last year whether he wanted me to play NSW Cup or 20s, and he told me it wouldn't have really changed what happened next year going forward.

"I played 90 per cent of the year in the NYC and I felt I owed it to my teammates to try to get them to that grand final.

"Mary talks to me all the time. He gives me lots of feedback. I'm pretty confident that he is going to give me a shot next year.

"I'm hoping next year is going to be a big year for me. It really depends on what Mary and Josh Dugan want to do, because he's really the one person in front of me. He's a world-class player so it's really up to Mary and what he wants."

The Penshurst RSL junior is listed at just 80kg – 22kg lighter than Dugan – but doesn't think his weight would hold him back from making his NRL debut.

Where Dugan uses his size to get his side on the front foot, Dufty uses his incredible speed and sleight of hand to trouble opposition defences.

"I'm not the biggest guy running around but I find it fun just running around people," he said.

"Mary's not too fussed about my weight because I just use speed and my skills, but the dietician wants me to put on a few more kilos just to be safe."

Should Dufty bulk up in the off-season, the 20-year-old's utility value would soar.

"Growing up I played in the halves so I wouldn't mind if Mary gave me a shot wherever and I'd take it with both hands," he said.

"It would mean the world because growing up as a kid – especially in the St George area – you want to make that debut just to make family and friends proud."

The guy has played a lot of footy in the halves as a junior

May be ideal for 4th bench spot as our super sub when the opposition forwards start to tire

Robson: An Invaluable Pre-Season
Sat 10th December, 07:00AM
A A

St George Illawarra Dragons National Youth Competition team hooker Reece Robson admits he is learning invaluable information off his more senior peers.

The Australia Schoolboys representative, who recently extended his contract to remain at the Red-and-Whites for a further three seasons, notes that the opportunity to learn under fellow rakes Cameron McInnes and Josh McCrone has been of great benefit to his ongoing development.

The NSW U18 representative is one of five members of the Young Dragons ranks invited to partake in the first-grade pre-season training program and he believes all members have benefited from the experience.

“I’m learning a lot from both Cameron McInnes and Josh McCrone and just trying to take in as much as I can and improve the areas that I need to,” said Robson.

“The other younger boys are also going well and handling the step-up well so I’m pretty proud of that.

“The pre-season training has been great but we’re now nearing the holiday break and I’m looking forward to that.

“We all remain switched on which is good to see and I am still trying to learn as much as I can now and during that break to come back in ready to start the new season.

“I’m trying to remain as enthusiastic despite the body having a few miles under its belt now but I’m hoping to keep it up between now and the break.”

Thompson: Loving What I Do
Thu 15th December, 07:00AM
A A

St George Illawarra Dragons second-rower Joel Thompson is proud to again be part of the NRL Indigenous All-Stars squad announced on Wednesday.

The Ken Stephens Medal winner has been named for a sixth time in the team which will be coached by Laurie Daley.

Thompson, who additionally re-signed for a further two seasons with the Dragons during the off-season, is keen to test himself amongst a star-studded Indigenous All-Stars outfit who will fact the NRL World All-Stars at McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle on Friday, February 10.

"It's a great side; to have 'JT' (Thurston) back in the side, one of the best players to have played the game and across the paddock it's a really good side and the All Stars side is a strong side as well so it should be a really good game," said Thompson.

"I love what I do.

“I'm in a privileged position being a rugby league player and I think it's for me now and other players to be that role model and help the rest of the community up and do what we do.

"This week in Newcastle will be a powerful week to get some strong messages across to the community and the kids.

“It's hard to put into words the effect it does have out there.

"It's a great week not just for the game but what we do in the community and it's a massive honour to be in this position."

Milne: Linking With Macdonald
Mon 26th December, 07:00AM
A A

St George Illawarra Dragons centre Taane Milne is hoping to get the opportunity to link-up with teammate Nene Macdonald at some stage during 2017.

The Clovelly Crocodiles junior as well as the Red-and-Whites new recruit are familiar with each other having both played together at junior level during their tenure together at the Sydney Roosters.

Milne was a late addition to the first phase of pre-season training having been afforded an extra week’s rest due to his involvement with the Illawarra Cutters in their NSW Cup Finals campaign last term.

“I started this pre-season later due to my involvement with the Cutters and did return a bit unfit but I’ve quickly caught up to where I need to be,” said Macdonald.

“The pre-season has been tough and it’s personally been the hardest one that I’ve been involved in so far but the boys have all been ripping in which has been good to see.

“I’ve known Nene for a few years having played SG Ball and in the NYC with him during our time together at the Roosters.

“Hopefully we can get a little combination going now that we’re both here if given the chance.

“We know though that nothing is given and that an opportunity like that to play together needs to be earned which is what we’re doing.”

De Belin: Wrist Injury Only Minor Setback
Tue 27th December, 07:00AM
A A

St George Illawarra Dragons lock Jack de Belin remains optimistic despite suffering a scaphoid injury which will see him sidelined for at least the next four weeks.

The NSW Country Origin representative sustained the ailment to his wrist during the final week of the first phase of pre-season training and ultimately required surgery to his wrist.

De Belin admits while it is never ideal to suffer any injury he is happy the incident has occurred now and not during the new campaign proper.

“I was doing a drill the other day and I literally fell over awkwardly and stuck my wrist out,” said de Belin.

“We didn’t know what happened and the scans came back not indicating anything but it still fell funny.

“I went back for another one and this time it came back with a fractured scaphoid which required surgery.

“I expect to only be out for a month so fortunately it is a good time to do it given it is the pre-season and there will still be plenty of time to get ready for the season.

“I have been loading the legs with cardiovascular work but not able to do ball skills or wrestling but with time I will be able to ease back into both of those.

“Pre-season has been going really well for the playing group and the program has been put together by our new performance staff who have been outstanding.

“I cannot compliment them enough as it has been a lot of hard work and this break has been well-deserved.”

Dragons fullback Josh Dugan ready to start pre-season training after knee injury

KANGAROOS star Josh Dugan is ready to “rip and tear” into the Dragons’ NRL pre-season training despite suffering a knee injury in the Four Nations final.

Dragons head of athletic performance Nathan Pickworth said Dugan had suffered a grade one ligament injury late in his two-try display in Australia’s 34-8 win over New Zealand.

But Pickworth said Dugan would hit the ground running when the NRL club returned from their Christmas-New Year break.

“His knee is looking pretty good,” he told Dragons TV.

“He did some cardio training while he was away (on end of year break).

“He rang me when he got back and was keen to know what he can and can’t do.

“It’s good to see Duges that way, ready to rip and tear into training.”

Meanwhile, Pickworth confirmed the man they had expected to step up in halfback Benji Marshall’s absence in 2017 — Drew Hutchison — had undergone a successful knee reconstruction before Christmas.

He is expected to be sidelined for at least six months.

The 21-year-old suffered the injury at training last week just before the club’s festive break.

“It went really well. It was a routine ACL reconstruction,” Pickworth said.

“He didn’t have much damage anywhere else on the joint — we will push on per plan.”

Pickworth said lock Jack de Belin had broken his wrist and undergone surgery to insert a pin.

“The good news is he doesn’t miss any game time so he will be right and ready to go for our trials,” he said.

And Dugan’s Kangaroos teammate Tyson Frizell has made a splash despite returning from the Four Nations campaign nursing an ongoing back complaint.

“He’s had some scans and there’s some stuff in there around his disc so we will have to manage it long term — but we already knew that,” Pickworth said.

Nona: I'll Grab Any Opportunity
Thu 29th December, 07:00AM
A A

St George Illawarra Dragons five-eighth Shaun Nona is counting down the days until he can commence his fulltime pre-season training with his new teammates.

The pivot is presently recovering from ankle surgery having undergone treatment during the off-season after suffering the ailment whilst representing former club the Illawarra Cutters in the NRL State Championship Grand Final.

Nona admits he mentally received a boost after training in the outdoors for the first time this pre-season and hopes he can catch-up on lost time so he can impress Head Coach Paul McGregor.

“I’ve started running and the signs are looking good,” said Nona.

“The physios are doing everything they can to get me right so I can start training properly with the boys.

“Mentally it was good just to run on the grass having been in the cardiovascular room for the past six weeks so it was good to be outdoors.

“There are a couple of us players currently doing straight line running as they overcome some injuries of their own so it was good just to be out there with them.”

Dragons halfback Drew Hutchison underwent surgery on his ACL after sustaining the injury during pre-season training earlier this month.

The local Albion Park-Oak Flats junior is expected to be sidelined for at least six months which has now opened up a new opportunity for players such as Nona to fill the vacated role and partner captain Gareth Widdop in the halves.

“I am very upset with what happened to Drew and injury is something you never want to see happen to anyone,” said Nona.

“However, there is an opportunity now opened up and I will definitely be putting my hand up for it.

“Hopefully when I am fit to return to fulltime training with the boys I can impress.

“If McGregor did give me that opportunity I would certainly grab it.”

McCrone: We're Hungry For Success
Wed 28th December, 07:00AM
A A

St George Illawarra Dragons utility Josh McCrone will make the most of any opportunity afforded to him to play at halfback in 2017.

The Temora Dragons junior, who can play in the halves as well as hooker, is one of several candidates vying for the vacant role and partnering captain Gareth Widdop in the halves.

McCrone notes that it was unfortunate timing for fellow halfback contender Drew Hutchison to sustain an ACL injury prior to the holiday period which will see him now miss at least six months of action.

However, McCrone, who played alongside Hutchison in the Illawarra Cutters NSW Cup and NRL State Championship silverware double, believes his teammate will return stronger from the setback.

“I haven’t known Drew for too long but this has been the best shape that he has been in and kicked a field goal to lead us to two grand final wins as halfback,” said McCrone.

“That’s an enormous effort for a 21-year-old and he was looking good for Round 1.

“Unfortunately, one door closes for him but another one opens for me and for anyone else who can put their hand up to play in the halves.

“We need to take the positives out of this negative and Drew is a young guy who will come back fitter and stronger out of that.

“I thought I had been training very well and posed as good competition for Drew before he went down so there is now extra motivation to try and get that role and the responsibility that comes with it.

“I’m glad I was given the opportunity to start the pre-season three weeks after the other boys as the body is sore but I’m getting through it.

“Conditioning does take its toll the closer I get to being thirty and the hamstrings get sore but it’s to be expected during pre-season.

“However, I think all the blokes that returned the same time I did have really lifted the intensity as everyone is hungry for success at the highest level.

"It’s been a noticeable difference with the boys who have come up from the NYC as well as those promoted from the Cutters have entered with a spring in their step and everyone else has had to match them.”

McCrone is past his used by date as a FG half

Below average at best

Mann and Nona must be trialled in the No 7 role

Of some use as the No 3 half and hooker option for 2017

I don't like where we are at for 2017 but, given the position we are in then use this time to set things up for 2018. McCrone is a no, he is not the future. Try Mann, Nona, even Field and then if we don't find a gem amongst these guys at least we will know exactly who we need to go after.

Faifai Loa: Pre-Season Has Been Challenging
Sat 31st December, 07:00AM
A A

St George Illawarra Dragons winger Kalifa Faifai Loa is focused on maximising the benefits that come from a strong pre-season.

The Red-and-Whites have recently completed their first phase of pre-season training and conditioning under the guidance of new Head of Athletic Performance Nathan Pickworth.

Faifai Loa notes that the players have had to adapt to the rigours of the program set in place but have thoroughly enjoyed it due to the integration of drills from other sporting codes.

“It’s been tough this pre-season with the mixed changes but all the boys have loved it even though it’s hard,” said Faifai Loa.

“Nathan is a good bloke who knows what he’s doing and it can be seen on the field through all the different fitness, speed and agility programs he is having us do.

“It is definitely working with all the boys cutting down on their skinfolds so that will continue in the new year when the second half of pre-season starts.

“My goal is to get through the entire pre-season which is why I am only taking it one week at a time.”
