Provan came up with video referee idea in 1976

Future Immortal Norm Provan showed he was a visionary in 1976 when he wrote a column for Rugby League Week on his idea to bring in video replays to help referees.

His idea was to use the new at the time technology of the "television video disc" to help referees clarify decisions on try-scoring plays with a "neutral video committee of three officials" set up at each ground who would wave a red or green flag to indicate the final decision to the on-field whistleblower.

The video referee was first used in Australia during the Super League competition of 1997 and has been part of every season of the NRL era which kicked off the following year.

"We are not that far away now from what Norm suggested," NRL senior manager of officiating Bernard Sutton said.

"It's essentially the same system - independent people who review but do not look at every aspect but tries.

"When video referees first started, up until the end of 2015, they were at the ground and had a more sophisticated way of communicating by going to a board or a screen but essentially the system that Norm was referring to is not too different to what we are now in terms of video refereeing."

Modern aids are being used by to crucify referees - why can't modern aids be used to save them?

This week has been "chop up referees" week.

And all because of the television video disc.

1965-gf-norm-provan.jpg

After fulltime of the 1965 Grand Final Provan talks to some young fans on field ahead of the presentation. :copyright:NRL Photos
In my playing days the video disc did not exist and referees were spared the wrath which today springs from video replays.

Today, with the video disc operating, a referee has no hope in hell of being right.

I would not be in a referee's shoes for all the tea in China.

And if I was a referee I wouldn't make a decision on a try until the video has been examined.

Why can't a neutral video committee of three officials be set up at each ground?

If there was doubt in a referee's mind about a try he could signal to the committee who could then study the replay of the video.

A member of the committee would then signal, with either a red or green flag, if the try should be allowed or not.

I would not want to see the video used for every decision relating to the game - only for doubtful tries.

I'm sure referees would appreciate the availability of such a modern-day aid.

if I was a referee I wouldn't make a decision on a try until the video has been examined.

Norm Provan
At least let's consider the possibility and don't scoff at this suggestions.

This looks like being a vintage year for disputed tries.

It will be a record year of sacked referees if the video disc is not installed at all grounds.

Forming a video committee would be a way of keeping the vice-presidents occupied.

Jillaroos enjoying improved financial rewards
Author
Katie Brown NRL.com Reporter

After receiving $4000 to play five matches at last year's World Cup, Australia Jillaroos winger Karina Brown was happy to earn $3000 for the recent one-off Test against the New Zealand Kiwi Ferns.

Brown has heard the stories of the days Jillaroos players had to pay their own way in order to wear the green and gold. To go from that to their biggest paycheque yet for a single match shows the steps the women's game has made.

"It just seems to get better and better each time and that's all we're really asking for," Brown said.

"We got the 3k [thousand] match payment which was the most that we've received for a Jillaroos match ... so it's not the same as the boys, it's probably the only thing that was different, however, it was more than we received from the World Cup last year."

Before 2013, females only played representative footy if they could cover the costs of getting to matches and finding accommodation.

Match Highlights: Kiwi Ferns v Jillaroos, 2018

"2013 was first time the trip was fully funded by the NRL, so flights ... accommodation was all taken care of," Brown said.

"They used to pay to go to World Cups, pay thousands and thousands of dollars to go."

The Jillaroos also enjoyed having their own motel rooms for the first time - a luxury long enjoyed by the Kangaroos.

It's a big step forward according to coach Brad Donald who said his squad also enjoyed a new level of off-field support.

"Access to all the same technologies like athlete management system, we had a professor in sleep talk to all three teams, but the girls got the humidifier to utilise in their rooms to work on their best quality sleep," Donald said.

The Kangaroos were given $20,000 to play against the Kiwis men's side, but did take a pay cut to play Mate Ma'a Tonga which meant they too earnt $3000 dollars. That was the same amount the Jillaroos earned in their sole 2018 Test appearance.

The improved financial benefits come off the back of their World Cup victory and the success of the inaugural NRL Holden Women's Premiership.

Former dragons centre keen for St George return

DRAGONS: Matt Cooper having a throw with three Mudgee Dragons players, Troy Grant, Dugald Saunders and Adam Marshall. Photo: Jay-Anna Mobbs

With the two fixtures dates confirmed that St George Illawarra Dragons will play at Glen Willow in 2019, Matt Cooper told how the Dragons feel about revisiting Mudgee and why it’s important to do so.

In his last visit, former Dragons centre, Matt Cooper saw how highly contested players such as himself are received in the Mudgee community.

“Last year when I came out, I went to the local junior club and to a couple of schools, and everyone was so excited just to see their NRL heros in the flesh.”

Placing great importance on visiting regional NSW, Cooper says Mudgee is a place where the Dragons are always happy to return to.

“I know how much it means to the people of Mudgee so that way we can support the local town just as much as you support us.”

Mudgee is one of those places where we just can’t wait to get back out to.

Matt Cooper
Dragons will take on the South Sydney Rabbitohs for the 36th annual Charity Shield on Saturday, March 2, 2019.

The round 10 NRL Premierships game on Sunday, May 19, 2019, with the opponent to be announced when the 2019 NRL Draw is released.

When asked about the round 10 match, Cooper laughed up the idea it would be an answer to his prayers if it were the wooden spoon prone Paramatta Eels.

“We don’t know the opponent yet, but hopefully it is Paramatta.”

These matches are part of a two-year deal between the Dragons and Mid-Western Regional Council ahead of the 2018 season.

Tickets go on sale for the Charity Shield at the start of November.

The 2018 Charity Shield went to South Sydney who took out St George, 22-18.

Round 10 went to the Dragons who beat Canberra Raiders, 25-18.

NRL: South Sydney Rabbitohs sign Wayne Bennett on two-year deal
By George Vlotis

South Sydney Rabbitohs have signed NRL super-coach Wayne Bennett from the Brisbane Broncos as head coach for the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

The Rabbits pounced on Bennett on Thursday afternoon after reports their breakout coach of last season Anthony Seibold had been linked with a move to Brisbane in what may shape to be a shock swap deal between the two clubs.

It is understood the Rabbitohs rescinded an offer to Seibold after growing tired of waiting for a response amid his interest to move elsewhere.

The Courier Mail reported Seibold had emerged as the Broncos preferred pick ahead of Kevin Walters, Jason Demetriou and Michael Maguire and is close to signing a three-year $3 million deal from 2020.

“Wayne is one of the best, if the not the best, Rugby League coaches of all time and we are excited to see what he can bring to our Club,” Rabbitohs General Manager of Football, Shane Richardson said.

“His football record is second-to-none and his reputation as a leader is also of the highest order.

“Here he will have the opportunity to work with some of the best senior and up-and-coming talent in the game, which from our discussions over the past few weeks I know he is excited about.

Brisbane's Bennett appears to have been involved in the potential direct swap with Seibold, though the Broncos have yet to confirm that move.

Souths confirmed Bennett's appointment was for the 2020 and 2021 seasons with no mention as to whether the door was open for him to make the move for 2019.

Bennett is the only man to have won 500 games from the coach's box with seven titles to his name.

The 68-year-old already has a close relationship with the Burgess brothers through his time with England, and will have all the resources he will require at the Rabbitohs.

"I'm truly humbled by the opportunity to coach the South Sydney Rabbitohs," Bennett said.

"Souths is one of the iconic clubs in the game. I didn't think I would get this opportunity, but that opportunity has now come for 2020 and 2021."

The veteran coach had been told by his former club that his contract would not be extended beyond the 2019 season.

He assumed control of the Brisbane Broncos in 1988 and coached until 2008, before returning in 2015.

Kiwis keep winning formula for England series opener

New Zealand coach Michael Maguire has named the same 17-man side that defeated Australia for Saturday's opening Test against England at KCOM Stadium in Hull.

Fresh off their first victory over the Kangaroos in three years, the Kiwis will be out to make amends against the Wayne Bennett-coached England side following a 36-18 defeat in the Denver Test in May.

The intriguing international series is also in line with club news surrounding Maguire and Bennett, after their coaching futures in the NRL became clearer on Thursday.

NRL.com reported Maguire has verbally agreed to a three-year deal at the Tigers from next season, paving the way for Penrith to announce Ivan Cleary's return in 2019.

Bennett's move to Souths in 2020 was confirmed by the Rabbitohs on Thursday with Anthony Seibold expected to replace the premiership-winning coach at Brisbane in 12 months' time.

Canberra's Joseph Tapine has been named on an extended interchange bench for the Kiwis in the only addition to the squad after the Raiders back-rower missed the final two games of the NRL season with a broken thumb.

JWH enjoying life under Maguire

The Kiwis arrived in the United Kingdom last week to prepare for the three-Test campaign in the northern hemisphere, which also includes a trip to Liverpool's Anfield before finishing in Leeds on November 11.

"Our focus since leaving New Zealand has been fixed on this first Test," Maguire said.

"We have a group of players here who are exceptionally passionate about playing for the jersey. I've seen that. There are great signs for where we're going but we need to make sure we do everything right this week."

The side has been based in Manchester before the series, training at the world-class high performance facility of Super League champions Wigan and an elite academy owned by English Premier League's Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Bennett has included NRL regulars James Graham, Josh Hodgson, Elliott Whitehead and the Burgess twins Tom and George in a 19-man squad that will be finalised on Friday.

Maguire and Bennett are expected to front the English media on Friday evening (AEDT) following the side's final training sessions.

Kiwis: 1 Dallin Watene-Zelezniak 2 Ken Maumalo 3 Esan Marsters 4 Joseph Manu 5 Jordan Rapana 6 Shaun Johnson 7 Kodi Nikorima 8 Jesse Bromwich 9 Brandon Smith 10 Jared Waerea-Hargreaves 11 Kevin Proctor 12 Isaac Liu 13 James Fisher-Harris 14 Kenny Bromwich 15 Leeson Ah Mau 16 Martin Taupau 17 Adam Blair 18 Jahrome Hughes 19 Joseph Tapine

England squad (in alphabetical order): John Bateman, George Burgess, Tom Burgess, Daryl Clark, Jake Connor, Oliver Gildart, James Graham, Chris Hill, Josh Hodgson, Jonny Lomax, Tommy Makinson, Jermaine McGillvary, Richie Myler, Sean O'Loughlin, Mark Percival, Luke Thompson, Sam Tomkins, Elliott Whitehead, George Williams.

England hang on to beat New Zealand in first Test
Author
Alicia Newton NRL.com Reporter in England

England have taken a 1-0 lead in their Test series against New Zealand, with a late try to Oliver Gildart sealing an 18-16 victory on Sunday morning (AEDT) in Hull.

Both sides struggled to control the game in frosty conditions, but a late offload from Canberra-bound John Bateman was enough for Gildart to race down the sideline and beat Dallin Watene-Zelezniak to the line with 12 minutes remaining.

The Kiwis will rue their discipline late in the contest after taking the lead twice through penalty goals. That came despite the visitors struggling with field position throughout the contest.

James Graham was one of the best for England with 125 metres from 14 carries, while Jesse Bromwich (158m) and Marty Taupau (135m) set a platform for the visitors in an otherwise evenly-poised battle through the middle.

England were first on the board through Sam Tomkins, who finished off an attacking raid after Tommy Makinson got over the top of Jordan Rapana to collect a cross-field kick and keep the ball alive.

The Kiwis then produced a slick movement of their own to level the scores with Esan Marsters crossing after an inside pass from Shaun Johnson.

England winger Jermaine McGillvary then fumbled a ball midway through the first half, an error that enabled Kodi Nikorima to send Watene-Zelezniak over on the ensuing play for a 12-6 lead to the Kiwis.

Watene-Zelezniak was then next to turn villain on the stroke of halftime when he allowed England to level the scores through local boy Jake Connor, who was awarded a penalty try as the Kiwis fullback came across in defence leading with his knees in a point-scoring opportunity.

The four-pointer proved decisive in the two-point loss for the Kiwis but coach Michael Maguire saw the game differently.

"I'll have to have another look before I make another comment," Maguire said.

"It's one of those moments in a game you have to handle, at this level it's all about situations in a game and how you handle that.

"There were other times where people could've held onto the ball or an offload. They're the sorts of things we as a group need to get better at."

Temperatures at KCOM Stadium dipped as both teams returned from the break but Johnson was full of running immediately after the break to earn a penalty with a weaving run, the Kiwis taking the two points on offer for a 14-12 lead.

It took England three minutes to take a penalty goal of their own with back-to-back penalties leaving Kiwis coach Michael Maguire fuming at his side's ill-discipline.

Gildart's try with 12 minutes remaining turned out to be the match-winner despite a last-minute surge from the visitors.

"It was a great centre's try," Bennett said of Gildart's effort.

"We don't see enough of it. He did a great job, ran 50 metres and beat two players on the way. It was a great second half, a great game actually and we couldn't have given anymore. We didn't have a bad player.

"There's about 10 guys that played for England in last year's World Cup that aren't here for injury reasons mainly. We're building some depth which is really important."

Both sides travel to Liverpool on Sunday ahead of their next clash at Anfield on November 4.

Typical of Nulla Narks having a couple of whinging skirt boys being the most penalised.

Wonder who won between the coaches?
Bellyache or Robinson from the Rorters.
Both a pair of big girls blouses.

England hang on to beat New Zealand in first Test

Would have happened if DWZ didn't miss that one on one tackle at the end. Imagine if that was Dufty..people would be hysterical.
Imagine if Dufty made the team. Didn't realise he had Kiwi in him. DWZ is light years ahead of him. I did have an epiphany watching young Damian Mckenzie rip it up for the ABs. Smaller than the Duff, same age etc. Fearless little bugger. Different codes and please don't take offence getsmarty. Sincerely 99 Xx
