Very disappointing at Salford. Playing on Valentine's Day won't have helped, same goes for Catalans.

Salford's gate was probably better than I expected it to be. if they can be competitive then their gates will climb when they are playing the likes of Warrington and Wigan.

This gives a Round 1 attendance average of 11,137.

The average for the total played (last week had a R3 and a R17 fixture) so far is 11,907

2007 - 10,264 average (11,180 after 9 games)

2008 - 10,338 average (11,701 after 9 games)

2009 so far - 11,901 (9 games in).

It's fair to say that attendances have stagnated at around the 10-11k mark. There is no reason for the league not to beat last years average, but it will be interesting to see if they can crack that 11,000 mark. Still, media coverage continues to be dismal on all fronts

Brothers: for all your Superleague crowd stats go to the very handy slstats site.

As you'll see the league has increased its crowds year on year since 2002 although English league crowds have started from a lower base than NRL crowds (as hard as that is to comprehend).

One interesting thing to note from the stats is the consistency that has built up in the league, especially last season. What Victory says is true, the league is struggling to get above 11k per round, but you can attribute that to the fact that several of the more successful teams are starting to bump up against their ground limits while other non-traditional teams (especially Harlequins) are struggling to get any sort of decent crowd all year. The positive thing though is that the league has reduced the number of low average rounds to the point that there was only one round last year under 8,000. This is the main contributor to the new record attendance last year- the building consistency for the week in, week out attendance.

And it could very well be more difficult this year to break the average. The two new teams brought into the comp, Salford Reds and the Celtic Crusaders, will struggle to bring large crowds to games straight out the gate which will see downward pressure on the average, although with 2 new teams the total attendance of the comp should increase.

It'll be a very interesting year for crowds.

1.Yes, the have improved year on year for a while now, from about 7,000 in 2001 to around 10k now. With two new clubs, I expect the average to drop slightly this year.
2.RL is the second most watched sport in the UK in terms of TV viewing figures, and domestic attendances are virtually neck and neck with Union as the second most popular sport. The area where British RL is let down is international fixtures - the English people thrive on international competition. Sports like tennis, cricket and rugby union are ignored at domestic level, but during international season everyone becomes an England fan, even if they have no interest at all in the sport in question. In this area, RL is far, far behind most other sports in that there is no credible international competition for the public to get behind. In terms of the domestic league, we are in a strong position. However, to move RL on in England it's imperative to have more international fixtures. I can't comment about France.
