Aus v NZ crowd

I just want to commend the Newcastle public their fantastic support yesterday at the Aus v NZ match. The crowd of 32,890 was 110 short of capacity and broke the previous ground record of 32,642.

Add onto the back of the May test in Gold Coast that got 26,301 out of a capacity of 27,400 (was the 8th highest attended match ever at the venue)

And lets not forget the May 2010 game in Melbourne. It still holds the ground record of 29,442 out of a capacity 30,050

So the last 3 matches in Australia between the countries has an average of 29,462 and set 2 ground records. Sensational

It should be noted that Aus also played NZ as part of the Four Nations in Brisbane in Nov 2010. Add this in and we have the following:

May 2010: 29,442
Nov 2010: 36,299
May 2011: 26,301
October 2011: 32,890
AVG: 31,216

It's a shame that only a few of us in Sydney bother to turn up to international matches, which has lead to the ARL taking Kangaroo games away from Sydney.

But the ARL have definitely made the right decision and the proof is there for all to see.

Well done Newcastle.

The new stadiums in Newcastle and Melbourne allow League to make big dollars at some new venues.

what sort of $$ would they ahve made profit wise?
Don't know, but I went to the game in 1995 when the ground got the previous record, and i was sitting on a grass hill where the Johns stand is now and like 25k of the crowd i paid GA prices.
The ground has gone from having 5k ratty old seats and a few ratty corporate boxes to having 2k luxury seats in corporate boxes and 25k seats overall.
On a like for like basis, the ground would now make 3 times the revenue off a crowd of the same size.

I'll butt in here.

Last two Aus v NZ League tests in Sydney both drew 35K.

Both games were before NZ won the WC and last years Four Nations.

Sydney definitely deserves another Oz v Kiwis test soon.

Sydney's population is 4-5 million
Newcastle's population is one tenth of that.

For Newcastle to be getting >30k means Sydney has NO EXCUSE to not get at least 60k.

I was at the game yesterday, and I don't care what they say the capacity is, people were sitting in the paths and steps cos there was literally nowhere left to sit!

Perhaps Tinkler doctored the crowd figure down a little so that at some point (2012 would be good!) a Knights game will claim the ground record title and hold it until much later when the stadium can hold 40,000 or more?!

Either way, it looked fantastic on tv. It was live into Perth, and after the game, I needed to get some food shopping done and was wearing my Kangaroos jersey (despite it being 36°!). A few people commented to me that they'd watched the game and are now looking forward to watching the Four Nations in a few weeks. The majority of them said they were trying to get home in time to watch the union game, so it's not as if they got confused between the two codes ... which actually surprised me.

That one daytime test match in glorious conditions in a packed stadium in Newcastle may just have injected more life into Rugby League in WA. Awesome work. I know I'd have loved to have been there that day.

It was packed alright. In fact it was officially a sell out.

Also there were quite a few Kiwis supporters there too. I don't know how many of them came over from it or if they were Auswis.
