Really good article here:

http://www.theherald.com.au/news/lo...rquee-league-matches/2326764.aspx?storypage=1

A record Ausgrid Stadium crowd of 32,890 turned out for Darren Lockyer’s farewell appearance on Australian soil, providing an electric atmosphere for the players and an estimated gate-takings windfall of close to $1million for the NRL.

The choice to hold Tests in 'boutique' stadiums like Newcastle, Melbourne and the Gold Coast has really been paying off for the ARL lately. Have to give them credit for picking the right venues.

Also an awesome thing for spreading the word about League. Hitting up these regional areas not only looks better on TV, gets the game a better financial windfall, but also spreads the word about the game into areas other codes have little chance of reaching or, in the case of Melbourne, into 'enemy territory' successfully.

The other interesting quote from this article:

Kind said as well as one-off Tests, Newcastle would be a candidate for matches during the Four Nations tournament in 2014 and the rugby league World Cup in 2017.

I didn't think that they'd decided on a location yet...

How does the NRL get any money? They have nothing to do with internaionals! The rlif should get a cut of all test profits!

Pretty sure it's the ARL that gets the money ina split with the NZRL but that's what the journalist wrote.

The RLIF get's around 10% of all international gate takings from memory. The rest goes to the countries that played each other. Someone correct me if I'm wrong because I read the regulations a while a go.

How many other locations are there?

In my lifetime: UK, UK, UK, UK, Australia.
There's always New Zealand. I hear they're putting on some other sport's world cup as we speak.

Rugby is a religion in New Zealand.

They wouldn't be able to support a League world cup on their own.
