Australia vs Paraguay - International Friendly

Paraguay are the Scotland of South America it is no surprise we've never lost to them. Sweet strike from Carney and if it weren't for their goalkeeper we would have won by 2 or 3.

Wish he had Klose's strike rate at international level. Another double overnight, damn.

I wish Klose had the same strike rate for Bayern.

Good positive result I guess. Switched on the tv to see if I can watch the Suwon Bluewings match, and the three sport channels are all showing the same game (there's four games going atm). What the hell?

Lol wtf. Just heard on Foxsports News that apparently the Paraguayan Team staff were trying to prevent the players from shaking hands with the Australian team. Can't find a source to confirm it.

Considering this friendly was seen as a way of currying favour from the South American power brokers in the race for world cup hosting rights it's not really good news. Don't want to piss them off. That said, don't know why they would have been so unhappy?

I was switching to other windows a lot during the match so I didn't see every minute but didn't seem like it was a very spiteful match. The stream I was viewing was from the Paraguay feed, and there was a chatroom, plenty of whining in espanol about the reffing and stuff but it seemed quite exaggerated to me. Simulation is a culture in Latin America I guess, so I s'pose any match where free kicks aren't being rewarded for dives every few minutes is bad reffing.

What would they be whining about they got away with a few tackles that should have been yellow carded and twice their players grabbed the throat of an Australian player. I regard Yuichi Nishimura as one of the top referees in the world (better than the duds found in the Champions League) but he let a lot go and at the end the Paraguayans were flying in from all angles.

They were never in the game anyway a brief 10-15 minutes early on where they controlled the tempo was as close as they got.

One of their trainers who had white hair was going bonkers in the background of the coverage at the end he was pushing people and was pretty animated it looked like the fracas with Luke Wilkshire and the Paraguayans was still going on.

Yeah the ref was pretty conservative with his whistle and seemed to let some stuff go.

There were some exchanges between the teams. One that comes to mind is Kewell and Veron. Kewell had his feet hacked by Veron and was pretty animated afterwards. A couple of minutes later he came in with a lunging challenge on Veron after he'd already played the ball. Kewell was subbed off immediately after that.

Then there were the exchanges between Wilkshere and Benitez, which eventually led to Benitez grabbing Wilkshere around the throat. Wasn't a hard grab or anything, but was pretty stupid. Lucky not to get a red for it.

Yeh, I saw the guy grab Wilkshire by the throat right at the end, didn't realise it was a culmination of earlier niggle, just thought he was being a knob.

So what's everyone else's thoughts on our style of play under Osieck? I thought last night's performance was a vast improvement from how we played under Verbeek, seemed to get forward pretty fast and playing with a lot of width. Two wins and a draw from his first three matches in charge, against three pretty decent opponents. I'm still not totally impressed with his squad selections but it's looking pretty positive.

I think Japan and Korea are going to be damn hard to beat at the Asian Cup, so I don't expect to win it, but I think we can give it a good shake under Osieck.

Pretty promising I think.

The biggest difference is obviously a much more attacking approach. As you point out, getting forward fast, much quicker and without the backwards possesion based passing under Verbeek.

LOL.....its a worry though being found out at the back, but hey, rather lose 4-0 having a crack than 4-0 not.
