SG BALL
Balmain started the SG Ball (U18) competition in fine style with a commanding 38-6 victory over Manly Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval on Saturday, February 25.
The Tigers played some exciting rugby league to lead 28-0 at half-time with second-rower Ahmid Omar scoring three first half tries.
Omar opened the scoring with a try next to the posts. Five-eighth Dane Gernhoefer converted for a 6-0 lead.
A great left hand pop up pass by Balmain full-back Matt Ryan resulted in a try out wide to centre Brendan Train. Gernhoefer converted for a 12-0 lead.
Hooker Ben Falcone then broke from dummy half to race 30 metres to offload to centre Michael Achurch who sent Omar on his way for his second try. Gernhoefer converted for an 18-0 lead.
Omar scored his third try after a great cut out pass by half-back Rhys Jack found its mark for a 22-0 lead.
A beautiful pass from Ryan then saw Achurch score and with Gernhoefers conversion, the Tigers led 28-0.
Balmain prop John Kaifoto scored out wide soon after half-time for a 34-0 lead before Manly opened their account with a converted try.
Falcone was then rewarded for a solid game with a try on full-time to give his side a superb 38-6 victory in a performance that would have pleased coach Ray Windle.
Harold Matthews Shield
Balmain lost 26-10 to Manly in the opening round of the Harold Matthews (U16) competition at Brookvale Oval on Saturday, February 25.
Manly raced to a 16-0 lead before Tigers five-eighth Junior Goddard showed the ball before stepping inside the defence to score under the posts. His conversion saw Balmain trail 16-6 at half-time.
A fine try to winger Phil Wagener in the corner left the Tigers trailing 16-10 before two further tries to Manly sealed the match for the home side.
Jersey Flegg
Balmain lost 22-20 to Manly Sea Eagles in a trial match at Brookvale Oval on Saturday, February 25.
Winger Adam Falcone capitalised on a fine cut out pass by promising five-eighth Dean Caldwell to score in the corner for the Tigers. The scores were locked 4-4 at half-time.
An early second half try to Manly took the home side to a 10-4 lead before Dean Jamieson scored out wide for the Tigers to trail 10-8. The try came on the back off a good strong run by prop Ewen Cameron on the previous play.
Some swift passing and stepping then saw full-back Dean McGrath score under the posts for the Tigers to give his side a 14-10 lead.
Two quick tries to Manly saw them lead 22-14 before a converted try to Mark Russell took the score to 22-20.

Their great win was spearheaded by Matt Ryan son of Balmain Tigers living legend and former inspirational captain Trevor Ryan and supported by Rhys Jack the son of another Tigers great and Kangaroo fullback Garry Jack.

Balmains Tiger cubs played with determination and displayed true Tiger Spirit which theyd obviously learned from their illustrious fathers and hopefully a lesson for some of the big headed senior players still contemplating their future. Loyalty is a Tigers prerequisite.
This Saturday the junior rep sides meet Illawarra at the Gong at 12 noon and 1.30pm then have a break the following weekend when the 2006 NRL Premiership kicks off with the Firsts Tigers playing a 2005 semi final replay with the St George Sinners. BALMAIN have unearthed an outstanding 16 year old rugby league forward prospect in their junior representative ranks with the power and skill to go a long way.

He is rugged S.G Ball second rower Ahmid Omar, a former Canter-bury junior, who has made a huge impact since joining Ray Windles U/18 Tigers squad last season.

The powerfully-built Omar was at his blockbusting best as Balmain opened their 2006 S.G Ball Cup campaign last Saturday with a crushing 38-6 victory over Manly at Brookvale Oval.
There was no stopping the hard-running back rower who capped a big match with three tries in the opening 21 minutes to help Balmain establish a commanding 28-0 lead at the interval.

Emerging utility Matt Ryan produced a Player of the Match performance for the Tigers - igniting the attack with his dashing runs from fullback and creating several tries with clever passes.

Talented hooker Ben Falcone, forward Tohi Leha, five eighth Dane Gernhoefer, prop John Kaifoto and half back Rhys Jack also impressed in the Tigers seven try rout.

Omar opened the scoring after 4 minutes when he crashed over out wide before Ryan set up a try for centre Brendan Train soon after for a 12-0 lead. Balmains third try in the 10th minute was a gem after Falcone burst through and linked with centre Mitchell Achurch who offloaded to a flying Omar who scored near the posts.

The Tigers were right on top when Omar notched his third try and Achurch crossed out wide before the break.
Kaifoto scored early in the second half after an overlap was created by a neat offload and run-around move by prop Leha. Gernhoefer capped a solid game by booting his fifth goal.
