recieved a pretty long mail-out from the club yesterday outlining our plans preparing for our centenary year in 2008. IF things pan out as they hope (its a pretty big if but is possible) things would look very positive, at any rate its good to see they are attempting SOMETHING. Thought I'd summerise it here for those interested. Most of it isn't new but its the first time I've seen all the info collected together
Leagues Club
*when the pokie tax is fully implemented it will cost the leagues club an extra 2,100,000 per year currently the leagues club makes a profit BEFORE football grants of only 1,000,000 per year
* with no changes it is concluded that Balmain Leagues would have to restrict sporting grants this year and face solvency issues next year.
*centrepiece of plans for 2008 is a redevelopment of the Leagues Club premices at Rozelle aiming to reduce the reliance on gaming revenue
*plans for the new site include a new club premises, residential apartments, pretail plaza (possibly including supermarked, cafes, food court, specialty retail, restaurants, childcare facilities and function areas with links to Darling Street and parking.
*Leagues Club plans to lodge a master plan for the site within next two months - the goal is to obtain consents and approvals and complete redevelopment by 2008
Hall Of Fame
*plans for a "Tigers Hall of Fame" in the new club premises
*First major Rugby League Club to have its own hall of fame
*'state of the art facility within the club with will attract visitors as an item of great interest'
*starting in march this year will be holding an annual dinner to induct new members into the hall of fame. This function will become the highlight of the tigers social calendar.
Superdome
*although proposals have not progressed as quickly as hoped they maintain an integral part of our strategic direction and we are confident of achieving some degree of finality relating to the project before the end of the year.
Leichhardt Oval
**for the next three years Wests Tigers will play only 3 games at leichhardt while working with state and local government to upgrade the oval
*a recent report on improvements to LO recommended four stages of work
- basic refurbishment work to cost $2,445,000
- upgrading the ground to contemporary standards to cost $2,450.000
- development of the area behind Latchem Robinson grandstand to cost $3,300,000
- development of area at the Mary Street entrance and construction of new granstand to cost $4,030,000
*encouraged by support from Leichhardt Council who want NRL footbal to remain at LO. Also encouraged by support of the State Government who will continue to work with us to find the funding solution for the improvement of LO.
*overview of the upgrade plans is displayed at the Leagues Club
Wests Tigers
*nothing really interesting here - goal to finish regularly in the top 4, exciting talent, record season ticket sales etc etc
Balmain Tigers
*agreement with R-E secured the future of PL, Fleggm Ball and Matts
*one of the largest football funding agreements tigers has ever entered into
*the agreement has a 3 year term and is reviewable annually
*agreement relates only to the PL team the funding allows for the other teams to be resourced in a way that maximises their prospects of success
*at times when other clubs are struggling to meet commitments relating to teams below NRL level future of our teams is secure
*funds also allow us to maintain commitment to junior league - appointment of Darren Mooney as operations manager of junior league
-------------------------------------------------------
the most interesting thing that I didn't know about is the fact the R-E agreement is not, at this stage, permanent. With a bit of luck if things DO go to plan and the club is able to get back on its feet financially 2008 would be the perfect time to relaunch ourselves as the 'Balmain Tigers' in PL
