Ban penalty kicks to touch

Inspired by SWR, but in all seriousness, I think they should do away with kicking for touch when a team gets a penalty. in the modern game where 50metres per set is the norm it basically means that every penalty results in a team bing down in the opposition 20 by end of set and likely cross kicking for the corner (boring). I would suggest that a penalty should be a tap at the point of the penalty, thus making teams actually have to work harder to get in an attacking position.

Would also remove the potential ball in the face of the gormless woman in the stand who is looking the other way!

Or the opposing team could just not give away penalties. Stupid idea really, why punish the team that doesn't commit an infringement?

for this reason alone i say keep the play in the game..

one of the funniest things i've ever seen at the football is someone on the hill at brookvale oval getting clocked by a john simon kick for touch...

WOuldn't go as far as completely banning it, would follow the rule used in the all stars game except blowing a penalty and just making them play it and res-setting the count instead of six to go on the run, only few seconds difference in time. Kicks for touch to be awarded to more serious penalties (high shots, grapples etc)

1. It's funny when someone gets whacked by a footy because they should have been paying attention to the game.
2. During the first tackle or 2 in each set it will be free game for attempted strips and similar penalties because the result is simply 1 or 2 extra tackles.
3. Dumb idea. Go join SWR and sit in the corner with one of these -

All Stars game had the right idea, but rubbish execution.

Offsides, strips, marker infringements, holding, etc - minor non-violent defensive infringements, attacking infringements = tap restart.

Dangerous tackles, violent play, professionl fouls, repeated infringements = penalty kick.

I'd be happy for restarting the tackle count. But then you'd probably get the defence slowing down the play the ball or trying to rake it out on the first and second tackle because they know that the worst that could happen is the attack receive an extra tackle or two.

my old halfback used to aim for people when we got penalties only a few metres in from touch or from their tryline and didn't have much room to kick. Instead of just tap it for a few metres like you usually do would just low punt it a metre off the ground and take out opposition fans, only worked well cuz he had a massive boot and could kicked 40/20's with the ball only going 2 or 3 m high. Broken noses, spilt beers, broken car window (that was hilarious) and managed to put one into the canteen.

I'd still allow the kick for line but instead of a new set of six you resume on the tackle you were up to. If the penalty comes on the 4th or 5th you get 3 extra tackles.

1) You can't just keep giving the opposition an extra tackle every set and expect to dominate posession.

2) For repeated infringements/a refusal to clean up the ruck, the referee can start penalising with kicks.

I've become more convinced that an NFL style standard yardage penalty based on the infringement would be good. Marginal matters like strips should be given no extra metres whereas serious foul play should be 15 or 20m maybe. But I don't have a particular grievance with the kick for line. There is no greater joy than your team giving up a penalty you don't think should have been given only to see some clutz fail to find touch from the kick.

Agree. This would also stop players milking penalty goals to win the game cheaply. I like it.

+ make teams actually work for field position.

The modern game is so focused on momentum and field position, it seems so cheap to see a 40-50m march upfield on the back of a dubious strip.

F'n oath! This should be the deal clincher. Personally, as far as league goes, there isn't much that I find more infuriating than a referee's on the fly interpretations of holding/slowing down the ruck and strips. Decisions made in real-time are never going to be perfect so the solution should be focussed on alleviating the fall-out from wrong calls. Whether, or not, this would be an invitation to defenders to infringe more is something that would also clearly need to be addressed.

Disagree. What incentive is it for the offending team to not re-offend? You take away the kick to touch, teams will constantly remain offside or hold down in the play the ball to pin their opposition in their own territory.

It's simple. Don't offend and you wont be punished.

Wtf...how will they pin them down anywhere if the attacking team is continually restarting their sets?

And if they aren't responding, the referee could penalise them harsher.

isn't the sin bin for persistent offending? Not to mention giving back to back sixes every set will soon see you losing games.
