You guys are taking this out of context. Elliott has no problem with teenagers in the NRL under the current system. With the new one... he is making a valid point.

With the new competition, players Over 20 don't have Premier League to go back to. So every teenager can play NRL or under 20's. But every 21 year is either first grade material, or facing a massive drop to play for a feeder club.

He believes that with the changes that the Under 20's comp will bring... they should change the rules of first grade. Panthers have 10 people competing for our backline next season (Wesser, Gordon, Jennings, Daniela, Rooney, Lewis, Youngquest, Blair, Tighe, Sammut), with only 5 jerseys available. Say the guy who misses out is over 20... what happens to him then?

What ?? There will be no premier league competition?

I thought it was going to be under 20's then premier league then NRL... can someone explain it please....

So if a 25 yr old first grade player, say Willie Tonga for the bulldogs was dropped from first grade for a week... where would he go and play ?

As for Willie Tonga, i'm not sure. But Luke Priddis and Tony Puletua would have to play for Windsor Wolves next season if they aren't in first grade. Likewise if Wesser can't get his first grade spot back as Michael Gordon or Jarrod Sammut step up and claim it.

Top top it off, they wouldn't even play at CUA Stadium... they would play in Windsor.

The whole Under 20's comp idea is just stupid. Considering all the best teens will play first grade, it could make a lot of the Under 20's team extremely average in quality, and very boring to watch. The Jersey Flegg, Premier League, NRL setup was much better.

Stupid idea, it'd just open up our sport for Union and the ESL to pick and choose all our best young talent offering them the chance to play top flight league/union well before they'll get the chance to in the NRL as well as more $$$ than they're going to get in an under 20's comp. Then we'll end up with all our experienced players heading overseas and no youth to replace them, then we'll truely be f**ked won't we?

So there will be no premier league next year ? damn.......

There will be Premier League next year.

It might not be called Premier League and the teams that play will probably be different but it will be there.

It's not even close to Premier League. It's basically club footy. Panthers have Windsor Wolves.

A first grader dropped back to Windsor Wolves for whatever reason would be insulted. Although i guess it could push him to improve his form.

So who will be the Wests Tigers "premier league" team ?

Balmain Ryde Eastwood and Wests Magpies will be competing in a competition to replace premier league at this stage. I think most Sydney clubs will be in this comp.

Regarding Premier League:

http://www.leagueunlimited.com/article.php?newsid=13415

The New South Wales Rugby League will use the emergence of the National Under-20s competition (Toyota Cup) as an opportunity to create an independent open-aged competition focusing on returning top level Rugby League to suburban grounds.

In the months that the National Under-20s has been in planning, the NSWRL has canvassed a range of options for its competitions structure, ranging from new opportunities at the Under-16 and Under-18 level, and an open-aged competition that will recapture the spirit of traditional clubs battling it
out on a weekly basis.

Clubs such as Wests, Balmain, Newtown, Auckland and Norths have indicated their desire to be involved in this standalone competition - which will replace the VB Premier League - and a majority of NSW National Rugby League clubs have indicated their involvement through a joint venture method or
otherwise.

The advent of the new open-aged competition, the expansion of the junior representatives and the niche-filling Jim Beam Cup competition will see the NSWRL provide opportunities for every level of footballer;

* The best Under-16s Harold Matthews and Under-18s SG Ball teams to compete with their Queensland counterparts for "National champion" status from 2008 onwards, with the added incentive of potential selection in Australian U16 and U18 sides to play New Zealand each year.

* The open-aged competition to provide the best players outside NRL level, playing at local and traditional venues which will often be vacated due to NRL away games.

* A semi-professional Jim Beam Cup competition that gives players an opportunity to play at the best of their abilities without the requirement of full-time commitment.

"We've been given a chance to streamline our competitions and further improve the pathways we already have for kids wanting to progress through to elite level football," NSWRL General Manager Geoff Carr said.

"We had feedback from many clubs that a credible open-aged competition is very important, and with the Toyota Cup, in most cases, providing the only fixture prior to an NRL clash, there is a real opportunity to develop this competition through playing stand-alone fixtures and double-headers.

"If games are programmed correctly, we can take advantage of situations where, for instance, Wests Tigers might be playing away, so a Wests versus Balmain clash could be scheduled at Leichhardt Oval - to provide credible suburban football to Sydney rugby league fans."

"The Jim Beam Cup was never intended to breach the gap between an Under-20s and open-aged competition - it is a unique competition with a $150,000 salary cap that is designed to ensure teams are not stacked."

In conclusion, the NSWRL will now allow a period of time for clubs to complete negotiations for joint ventures, before finalising its competitionstructures.

I heard that the Broncos will be using their National Under-20s team as more of an Under-19 and 18 development squad. They intend to promote their best Under-20s players to Queensland Cup (as they do now) to prepare them for NRL.

Why cant the NRL or NSWRL get their @rse into gear and tell us what exactly is happening with the Premier League or whatever this competition is going to be called. Who's competiting, how this will affect the NRL, which team will be feta team to which NRL club.

All I hear is "apparently" theres gonna be an open age competition.

Nothing official, no yes or no answer. No-one bloody knows. No wonder players around 21-23 are probably gonna sign with the ESL, or worse Rugby Union, cause they dont know whats happening, and dont want to end up like Josh Hannay or Brett Seymour playing park football, in front of 200 people.

Now Im not worried about the Under 20s comp, I think its going to be great, but what about players over 20, who have barely played first grade but are keen to?

Im so sick of the Rugby League officials making people wait. Where is their plan for 2008 or the next 2 years. Hell the AFL have got a 5 year plan FFS.

I absolutely hate Matt Elliott, but his point wasn't about the talent of the players.

What's the point of having this Under 20's competition replace Premier League and trying to bring some major focus to the competition, when the best Under 20's players are in first grade anyway? A couple of weeks ago, the Panthers Toyota Cup side was missing 15 players through injury and first grade... which left a side which was far from competitive.
