NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg says he can't see Ben Barba returning to the competition after his sacking by the Cowboys over an alleged assault.
Barba
had his contract terminated by the North Queensland without playing a single game for the club on Friday night, following allegations he physically assaulted his partner at a Townsville Casino on Australia Day.
"We have run out of patience and tolerance for misbehaviour off the field and I will repeat again that violence against women is the very top of that list," Greenberg said on Saturday.
"If you're violent against women you can expect to be removed from the game. It starts now.
"I haven't seen the footage as yet but if it shows violence against a woman there can be no debate. Ben Barba will be out of the NRL immediately and I can't see him ever returning.
"Certainly if the evidence is there he won't return under my watch.
"I issue this warning to players again. The game has changed and community expectations are clear. We won't tolerate misbehaviour and the sanctions will be strong, especially for violence against women.
"We had a brilliant 2018 on the field, but quite frankly the off-season has been a complete train wreck."
Greenberg applauded North Queensland's swift action in terminating Barba's contract.
"He's just come back from his second illicit drugs strike and clearly he was on his last chance. The Cowboys have acted decisively and that's the kind of leadership the game needs."
