Barba sacked by Cowboys

Then there's Scott Bolton, looks like he's free to play too after pleading guilty to assaulting a woman. Greenberg is foaming at the mouth over one case while allowing others to pass.
Mate Todd Carney was banned for pretending to piss in his own mouth where as Matt Lodge was given the greenlight back into the game depsite doing his best Michael Myers impression and terrorising a family in a home invasion.

It's absolutely bonkers.

I never said the overall number of fans has gone down. You realise its possible to both gain and lose fans.
If you said that initially it might have made more sense. As a general statement, it's plainly wrong though.

Is the Bolton case really analogous to the DV ones? According to the reports he touched a woman's thigh in a bar.

And Dylan Walker and numerous other players who have hit the media in the off season. You cant say he has to wait for the court cases when clearly he has not in Barbas case. Scott Bolton is a great example of the inconsistency. Found guilty of assault of a women just a couple of weeks ago yet NRL has not made any statement on it. The time to sort this sht out was last offseason when the players were given a massive pay rise and told they are now "partners in the game". Should have had a zero tolerance policy released then, but Todd is no visionary lol

I understood there was no police complaint made in relation to the Barba incident?

Refresh my memory then.

Why was he marked "never to return"?

1. He was never even life banned. Greenberg indicated that he would have to show he is a fit and proper person to be registered and that would not be a easy process.

2. He had literally dozens of offences across his career, with the bubbler incident being mid-range and most being quietly dealt with while Canberra kept on hoping he'd come good.

3. and the key part - no club actually bothered (the Cowboys deal fell through before getting to the crunch if i remember), because he's more trouble than he's worth as an injury prone, bad news prone, washed up 31 year old.

The shorter answer is, the NRL believes Lodge (despite the obviously worse crime) is capable of becoming a useful person, while Carney has time and time proven himself to be a deadshit, not even willing to fake the steps required to turn himself around.

I assume there must be some right of appeal to this ban - will be interesting to see how the NRL reacts when his lawyers wander in with a bucket-load of cases from the past few months alone.

No, nor is it the NRLs job to do what the justice system should be doing, yet here we are.
How is the NRL replacing the courts here? Barba's repeated poor behaviour is a blight on the game, they have every right to say, too bad, you've had your chance, we're done with you. It sounds like his contract with the Cowboys was deliberately written with a similar lack of flexibility in mind.

If the issue in question is the NRL's inconsistency in applying penalties to players then I completely agree, they seem determined to make up rules as they go along, based on public sentiment.

Dozens of offences, can you count them out for me? Todd just helped GI get off the same thing Carney got punished for.

And while I agree that Greenberg is a largely incompetent buffoon who is completely reactive to image over substance, there are a couple more things worth noting

1 - the public rarely has the whole story, while the NRL usually does. There has to be some level of belief that their decision making is based on the whole picture. What were the details of the offence, what were the circumstances, is it actually out of character, is the player likely to reoffend, what steps has the player taken.
Simply, they have more information than we do. Scott Bolton case is a good example - we have people here saying "why wasnt he life banned, he assaulted a woman". He was convicted of touching someone on the thigh. Lack of information and misinformation leads to dubious comparisons, this is why the NRL insist on a case by case basis for these things.

2 - Greenberg has showed some rare backbone in sticking to his guns, taking each case on its merits when most of the public is calling for blanket life bans. Bowing to public pressure would be taking the easy way out.

Carney's ban was the congruence of repeat offences wasn't it? The bubbler was just the last straw in a long line of f**k ups by him.

yeah
it would be like if a kid repeatedly breaks windows, teals, bullys beats up other kids and then finally gets kicked out of school for drawing a dick on a desk.

he did dumb shit at the sharks and chooks that got covered up
