Beagles forward pack.....

Messages

Just thinking about it, if the beagles complete their signings for the year as reported in the media, they will have a bloody good forward pack (given everyone stays fit)....
13.Nik Kosef
12.Russell Bawden
11.Steve Menzies (c)
10.Nathan Long
9.Jim Sedaris
8.Paul Stringer/Mark O'Meley/Josh Stuart (?) (cant remember what happened to them
Not a bad forward pack, don't we think??

I think it's a real shitty forward pack for a real shitty team. Stringer has gone to South s and O'Meley to the dogs. Kosef has a bung knee and Bawden is just bung. Sedaris has'nt played for two seasons and was in decline when he was playing. I have no idea about their backline and their halves but I think they are certs for the spoon. They suck.

Im not to sure about Rusty Tigertread. I did read somewhere that he was off to the beagles, but you may be right....

As for it being a crap forward pack, i think you are a bit off the mark there legend. The majority of them have played rep footy. Kosef at his peak is a top player, Sedaris is an actual hooker, not just a dropkick halfback filling in. He is built in theBoxheadWalters mould, i think he will go well after a 2yr break. I thought that Stringerand Omeley had departed, i just wasn't to sure. Long is a great yards man, and Menzies is one of the most creative forward going around. They just need a forward, perhaps Josh Stuart isan option. Think you are being a tad harsh there, i hate the beagles as much as most but i don't want to see a team that gets flogged by 50 every start (anyone for 20 team ARL comps??)

I do and they still suck from the board right down to the ball boys. I want to see them pummelled each week by 50 so they can exit stage left ASAP.

Well Legend, if you think they are destined for the spoon, i don't think id like to reveal to you which other club they will end up battling with. The Kevin Neil Ozemail Raiders have signed no one of note and have lost several established first graders......

Neil should be shot. The Raiders need some established talent, and there was heaps on the market at the end of last year. He is a disgrace.....

The Beagles pack is patchy at best and, given a few players have injury clouds , their depth is suspect. I see now that they are in the market for Field to boost their backline.
While I do not wish them any ill will I must say I see the irony in Souths signing seven of their players. Overall they have lost their front row, their halves and a couple of other backs plus a lot of their depth. They would have to be 15 of or so points weaker per game and they weren't too flash in 2001.
As for the spoon there are probably a number of teams that could challenge for it, especially if they have a bad year.

MFC- I think you will find the Raiders have mismanaged their finances terribly.
With the Super League contracts expiring half way throgh 2002 these SL clubs are going to have to fend for themselves..some of them just have not got the money they had before.
Whilst the Nothern Eagles abortion took all the limelight as far as overspending and mismanagement..there are a number of clubs whose financial position are not healthy..and they will only get worse!

Beast, Canberra are currently well below the cap and one of the clubs who are trying to reduce player payments and be fiscally responsible rather than pay outrageous sums to the likes of Kimmorley & co. I also think you will find the club has become self sufficient and does not rely on any grants other than the standard NRL grant which all clubs receive. Edwahu has more info on that and should be able to shed some light on the actual financial situation of the Raiders.

I also think Manly will sign Field to join the incompetent bunch of RL misfits. He will fit in perfectly with his bumchum Hopoate.

I agree that when Manly sign Field they will be a thoroughly despicable outfit...he has some ability on occasions does Field but I think his general demeanour on and off field is too much too bear..basically I would not trust the little prick to play up again!
As for the Raiders well I will wait and see if Edwahu can expand on their figures but they are not too healthy!

I think the Raiders will do OK. They had some great moment sin a dissapointing year, but lets not forget their flogging of Brisbane at ANZ: so humiliating that Wendell was booed off with the rest of the side in his last match. Matthew Elliot was one of the UK's gun coaches. They might not be flash on paper, but they look OK off it.

Manly has4 contenders, the main ones being Wests. They are shit. Penrith need more than Priddis and Lang to be a force again. ANd Souths, well, any team with Craig Coleman as coach, and who lists Jacin Sinclair as a major signing is in trouble.

All this is good news for the Cowpats, who should now come about third last!

If Carl Jennings can bulk up the younger blokes and make the Raiders a much more physical side, they are definitely in with a shot at the top eight. Canberra lost most of their games by 6 points or less this year with two heartbreakers to Newcastle(The Finch incident and a loss to Melbourne at Colonial) we would have been on the verge of the eight. The team has a littel more experience and will come out a better side under Elliott.

Well, I can only talk about the Raiders financial position based on what I picked up from people at the club last year. Basically the club was not budgeted to receive any grants from either News or its 4 leagues clubs (although in the leagues clubs case this isnt out of the ordinary) last year. Poor crowds might of facillitated some sort of small grant, though I havent heard anything about it.
Basically, I am led to believe Canberra can comfortably survive in the current environment. They have some advantages over other clubs at the moment that make up for a lack of income from leagues clubs and crowds. Firstly, because of smart work by the club a few years back, Bruce Stadium is very cheap for the club to rent (Manuka was actually more to rent). Because of this poor crowds dont have as severe effect as at other clubs. Secondly they have a very low wage bill at the moment, which is obviously a big change from a couple of years ago. Thirdly, the club is well sponsored. With Canberra been a IT hub all the canberra sports teams have done pretty well in attracting IT related sponsors and the Raiders recently had theirs (Oz-Email) re-sign for another couple of years.
Lastly, the club is increasing its local assets, which is illustrated by the recent opening of a 2 million training facillity in Bruce. If there is another quick hike in player payments or if our performance, crowds etc stayed crap for a while then we would probably be in trouble and would have to look to the local goverment or the leagues clubs for money. Financially we cant compete with the biggest clubs anymore and it will take some pretty good work from those in charge to stop us from continually losing players to these rich clubs. player retention is probably our number one problem at the moment and the club is moving to sign our key players to longer-term deals before they hit the open market. I am also not guarenteeing that we arent going to go broke tomorrow because I cant say for sure what Kevin Neal has planned or exactly what he has been up to.

Glad to be back online at legends world of sport. The beagles look very ordinary indeed and having thelikes of sedaris, hoppa and possibly field make them more colorful than a force i think they should be handed the spoon save the wait

Good too see you back Sydney Raider! I'm sure that with Matt Elliot at the helm Canberra will see an upturn in fortunes. Hope so!

Bryce,

Don't know why you think that Souths think Sinclair is one of our major signings. Coleman is impressed by his attitude but I doubt that he is even pencilled in forthe top grade.

With regard to Coleman's coaching ability, we'll just have to see how the season unfolds. Souths will finish well away from the spoon and, once they gell as a team, will be reasonably effective around the middle of the competition table..

Cheers

He was announced as their first signing, aamid a bit of hooplah. There was a spread in the paper recently (SMH from mrmory) about how he will be Craigies partner in the centres. Souths are promoting him.
