“Eight ‘points’ around the head, eight top teeth … they play to the 1908 foundations of Norths and the 1948 formation of the WA Rugby League.”

“Not many people realise that the original logo, which had been around since 1978, was based off the poster from a 1976 B-grade horror movie called Grizzly,” he said.
“But there were people who felt the old version looked too surprised. So I made the adjustments to make sure he looks a bit more ferocious.”
The Perth bosses were on board.

The post read simply: “Sensational!”

How a fan’s logo design for the Perth Bears NRL franchise won over The Wiggles

The graphic designer who won over The Wiggles with his Perth Bears logo reveals the hidden meanings behind a creation that connects the club’s Sydney foundations with its future in the west.

He is the feel good story of the NRL off season.
The passionate fan and former professional wrestler whose graphic design handiwork is now the face of the new Perth Bears rugby league franchise.
Dave Carnovale, 39, is the sole creative behind the updated Bears logo unveiled this week as the expansion team gears up for its entry to the competition next year.
In an era when the importance of “brand” sees millions spent with marketing companies to research, survey, data dive and conduct empowering group hugs, Carnovale won over the club with a simple approach of “tradition meets the 2020s”.

He viewed the iconic and much-loved bear head on the old North Sydney jersey as a perfect link between the club’s heritage and its rebirth on the other side of the country.
But tweaks were needed.
“I’ve got a few Easter eggs in there,” he laughed.

“Eight ‘points’ around the head, eight top teeth … they play to the 1908 foundations of Norths and the 1948 formation of the WA Rugby League.”
There is also the Bear’s facial expression.
So too were The Wiggles.
“My boys are five, four and two months old,” he said. “The two older ones kind of get it’s a big deal after I showed them the paper the other day.
“But the biggest thing for them was when I got a positive comment and a follow on Instagram from The Wiggles. That impressed them.”
The post read simply: “Sensational!”

While he grew up on the Central Coast, Carnovale was a diehard Bears supporter – a family legacy after his father and uncles went to school “across the road from North Sydney Oval”.
He was gutted when the Bears exited the NRL in 1999, merging with Manly.
Turning away from the game in his teens, he became a wrestling fan and then a participant, turning pro in 2006. He combined bouts with fulltime work before retiring ahead of his 2022 marriage.
“I wrestled here and a little in the States, but didn’t make a living out of it,” he said. “I’ve got plenty of friends who did, in the UK, or were signed by WWE.”

Carnovale’s fairytale has played out off the field.
“It feels like going to the moon,” he said of the logo approval. “This is the graphic designer equivalent of winning a premiership.
“I could never have imagined when I was a kid supporting the Bears that I’d one day be designing the face of the club. Hopefully it’s something to last the next 20 or 30 years.”

Having your first team in the arl and the second in super league sure must’ve been conflicting

If not for Gus knights were gone to super league too and that would’ve been a massive blow to the arl

But you wouldn’t have won the comp in super league lol
Nah, Knights and ARL all the way. I was 15 when the Reds turned their backs on the establishment, and it was early in only their 2nd season, so I was disappointed that they did it, but I turned my back on them at that time too. To this day I've never watched an Australian superleague game, their Tri-Series (Origin), or any of their internationals. Had the Knights gone to the dark side, I genuinely don't know what I would have done. Thankfully it never came to that.

My fondness of the Reds were 1995 and the lead-up to it. Such magic times for League over here.

I was burned out from rugby league due to super league and wanted to give the game up

97 grand final kept me in. 1995 origin wasn’t too bad either.

Foxtel just had the 1995 World Cup semi final game where the Aussies minus the super league players beat nz in extra time

I’ve been bummed for the bears for ages how they got kicked out and how manly treated them. I know they weren’t the main focus of the club but I’m happy for them plus also the fans in wa who never gave up on a team

Perth red has been a pest for 20 years and it finally worked out in the positive lol

North Sydney were, in my lifetime anyway, always the 'lovable losers' club. You kinda always wanted them to do well, because they never won anything (not in the previous 70-odd years anyway!). If they'd won a GF in their latter years, people would have been happy for them (as opposed to a Brisbane or Manly at the time). But they kept getting to prelims and trying hard but getting no further.

Hopefully Perth Bears will be a team the rest of the League can get behind and hope they do well ... but maybe win something before too long!

No, why would they? They are a different club.
oh man the way you just immediately say no like its a foregone conclusion. such conviction. therefore whatever happens will be opposite to what you think. so that means norths will more than likely use this logo tostreamline it all under one bears brand.

i dunno why you do this to yourself aye, make such bold statements without any facts or inside knowledge only to then be proven wrong time and time again. lets state the real facts, they is that if a norths fan did the perth bears logo it likely means norths have been sitting on this logo for awhile and with the norths chairman on the perth bears logo you can bet ya bottom dollar they will use the same logo and likely just change out the perth wording to north sydney or leave the geographical title out completely like they have been doing for some time now.

the adoption of the logo will be no different to how almost every "bears" rl club used the norths bear head logo which they introduced to the game in late 70's.

There would be something amusingly ironic if north Sydney adopted the Perth branding lol

why? id bet this logo was originally conceived for them anyways. if a bloke who has been doing their graphic design stuff for years created it then you can almost assure it especially once its realised this logo predates nrl owned perth bears and failed western bears bid time lines. it was posted here something like 15-16 months ago...

the logo is a mordernisation of the traditional bears head logo. theres no irony in it at all, its simple streamlining of brand. good business.

plus its the same brand. red & black bears........

Bra…The Perth branding is the North Sydney branding. Do you live in the universe as the rest of us?

PVL’s literally made sure that the Perth Bears branding is that of North Sydney.

I'd go a red version of the middle cap. Or a red version of the top one but with black piping on the edges of the front panel.
