Norths people Is there anyone in the current Bears nsw cup who is hitting ripe age in 2027 worth bringing up to NRL? @Centy Coast

West Aussies Any stand out juniors in WA system right now 15-17 worth keeping an eye on? @Nuke @Dragonwest
Honestly, mate, I couldn't tell you. After I stepped away from being Joondalup Giants President, I've not been involved in the local game. I keep tabs on it, but don't follow it close enough to give anyone any scoops, I'm afraid.

Of the current Bears NSW Cup squad, ones to certainly look out for are prop/lock Ben Talty who is a stand out, Jesse Marschke (halfback/hooker) has returned to the Bears after an injury riddled time with the St George Dragons where he played six NRL games and with 18th man numerous times, Riley Meyn (2nd row) two games back from an acl injury, dangerous wide running player.
Hooker Nathaniel Roache (29yrs) was the next best thing in the NRL many years ago with the Warriors, he has played 27 NRL games between 2016 and 2021.
Unfortunately his career has been plagued with injury.
From our squad in 2024, most certainly try scoring sensation Allan Fitzgibbon who is currently in the Gold Coast Titans NRL squad, he has played two NRL games with two tries scored, when not playing in the NRL he plays in the Hostplus QLD Cup with the Ipswich Jets and then there is our 2024 NSW Cup Captain, prop and South Perth Lions junior Kurt De Luis, who is also currently playing in the QLD Cup with the Burleigh Bears.

In the Perth Competition you’d surely have to look at players from the North Beach Sea Eagles, they are two time Premiers and have been in the Grand Final for the last four seasons.
I was a fan of Joell Irvine (Joondalup Giants) but he is getting on now. Nuke would know more about him.
The Fremantle Roosters have also played in the last three Perth Grand Finals.

Yeah mate. Joell's too long in the tooth to be considered for Perth Bears when they come around. If this happened 10yrs earlier, maybe a different story. A pillar of the Giants, no doubt, but NRL's a younger man's game. I'm gonna be nice to him as I'm probably needing some roof work done on my place soon so will be calling on him..!

I first watched Joell play in the 2023 CAS Championships for WA and he really caught my eye with his hard running and aggressive defence. Plus with a surname like Irvine, it was hard to ignore him being a Bears supporter.

Adding to this do Bears plan on re-entering Jersey Flegg next year? @Red&BlackBear @Centy Coast

Aim has to be some Perth based junior sides eventually as well as North Sydney continuing their operations. If the Reds/Pirates could do Ron Massey & SG Ball last decade then you’d think they could manage Matts & Ball or Connell & Meninga teams with an NRL team coming. They’d probably get a better pick of WA juniors with an NRL side at the top of the pyramid now.
Yes, the aim is for JF to start back up again next season. If that happens or not, unsure but the clubs footy department is working hard for it.

There’s been early discussions with QRL about the possibility of bringing WA CC & MM sides into those comps. This will be added layers to the NS HM & SG sides currently in those comps.

Being completely honest at this stage the NRLWA generates fringe QLD Cup players mostly with the odd stand out capable of NRL. Some of those players would have been NRL material had the systems been in place from when they were 12/13.

Given the geographical spread of the qrl comps that would some travel imposition to jpin qrl comps. When they looked at itfor the wa reds in 2010 it was the reason they switched plans and went into bundy cup and sg ball instead of the original plan of joining QRL.

CC goes for 9 weeks and MM goes for 12 weeks. In its initial years it’s more likely that the kids get schooled and boarded up in QLD for duration. Once it gets traction, travel schedules will open up and teams will play in blocks.

Perth based training camp over the early summer, then base themselves in QLD for Feb to April?

Full-time Perth base staff to travel and stay with the players for 3-4 months? Is that really cheaper and less disruptive that flying every second week to play in QLD?

Not so easy when we are talking about kids with schooling, exams etc. the idea of having a perth club was to stop kids having to move east to get their rl development!

It’s a short term solution/pain for long term gain to bring them up to speed. Quite literally for a year or 2 max until such time that the overall comps are revamped to cater for travel both ways.

Mal Meninga is U19s. School might affect Cyril Connell Challenge where it’s U16s. To mitigate this now there’s already Q Cup clubs that have school affiliation that are bringing WA talent over already. Those kids live here for 8 weeks or so, play for a club and attend and play for the school that club has a connection too. IE Easts and Mable Park, Souths and Marsden.

Whether you like it or not is irrelevant. There isn’t an endless pit of money and it’s easier and far more economical to fly one team over for an 8 week block or 2x4 week blocks than 14 teams back and forth for the same period of time. Especially if it’s only for the first couple of seasons max.

Otherwise the other solution is you don’t get a CC in QLD team, which would mean only a handful of the most talented WA kids would be flying east anyways to play in Norths to join their HM and SG teams. Having a two pronged pathway is definitely the best way to bring a generation of kids up to speed and mitigating the possibility of some being lost in the system because they weren’t good enough to make just 1 available team. Of course this only relates to right now, maybe next half decade or so.

The end goal is to make the NRLWA club comps for U-15s, 16s, 18s and 20s competitive to the point it makes no genuine difference if they’re playing in NSW or QLD against far superior clubs. There’s thought process is to develop the best now then filter them back into the state comp to help raise the standards there.

There’s a long term vision and strategy which I’m sure will evolve and be flexible between now to when it’s enacted.
