DANNY Buderus' decision to take up a part-time role as a collision coach with the ACT Brumbies has put him on a collision course with the NRL. The Brumbies this morning announced Buderus, who has a year still to run on his deal with the Newcastle Knights, would spend one day a week during the pre-season helping the club with its "tackle-specific skills".
While the Brumbies were crowing, the deal is unlikely to sit well with the NRL, nor is Buderus' appearance at a press conference in Canberra this morning wearing a Brumbies top.
The Australian understands the NRL was unaware of Buderus' agreement with the Brumbies and could yet look to block the move.
“For me to be given a chance to start my coaching career with the Brumbies was an opportunity too good to pass up,” Buderus said.
“Coaching is something I’ve always thought would be an interesting way to keep a connection with sport once I’d finished playing and this opportunity certainly allows me to start the ball rolling.
“While all of my professional experience has been with rugby league, I’ve got an interest in all sports and have followed the progress of the Wallabies over the years.
“The Brumbies have a young group of players with plenty of potential. Considering my own experience I’m looking forward to contributing to their program and making an impact on the way the boys tackle and defend.”
Brumbies coach Jake White said: “It’s a pleasure to have a guy of Danny’s quality joining us at the Brumbies as a collision coach.
"It’s fantastic the Knights and the Brumbies have been able to come to this agreement and I can see benefits for both organisations.
“For the Brumbies, we are gaining some expert advice on the initial contact and first-up tackle which is an important part of the modern game. In 2012 our defensive record was one of the best in Super Rugby, but much of that was thanks to our commitment to each other and ability to scramble.
“I think with Danny’s help, we can make further improvements to our defence. I’ve spoken to Danny several times about the season ahead and he’s excited to be a part of the organisation. His record in rugby league speaks for itself and from what I can gather he’s a fantastic guy off the field too.
“I’d like to thank the Newcastle Knights, in particular their head coach Wayne Bennett for being so accommodating with Danny’s services.”

The NRL is looking to block this and rightly so

This sort of stuff can wait until he retires next year

i wonder if Bennett would have no problem with it if he was wearing another NRL clubs jersey and coaching them once a week

dumb to think he'd be allowed to do this while still playing in the NRL

Who cares what Buderus does in his spare time? Nothing story.

Who gives a f**k?

“Neither Danny Buderus nor the Knights have sought permission from the NRL to enter into a third party agreement as his playing contract requires and as the club is required under the salary cap Rules,” Mattiske said.

“It is hard to envisage any circumstance where an agreement could be approved that allowed a current NRL player to promote another code competing in the same market as an NRL team.

“The announcement today which saw Danny at a press conference in another code’s training gear underlines potential issues.

“We will be seeking an immediate response from the Knights and as much as we respect Danny’s intentions we do not see any way in which the proposal can be pursued.

“In conjunction with the RLPA we provide a range of specialist services to assist players in maximising off-field careers and these are all available to Danny and all players."

The NRL has blocked Newcastle hooker Danny Buderus from taking on a coaching role with the ACT Brumbies and warned that his appointment may be a beach of salary cap rules.
NRL interim chief executive Shane Matiske said the Knights had been asked to provide an immediate explanation about the announcement that Buderus would assume a coaching role with the Super Rugby outfit while continuing to play league.
Buderus fronted a press conference on Thursday with Brumbies coach Jake White to make the announce the new position.
“Neither Danny Buderus nor the Knights have sought permission from the NRL to enter into a third party agreement as his playing contract requires and as the club is required under the salary cap Rules,” Mattiske said.

Earlier, Knights CEO Matt Gidley said the final proposed agreement has not yet been seen by the club .
"As Danny enters his final NRL season before retirement, we have encouraged him, as we do with all our players, to engage in wide ranging work experience in preparation for life after football,” Gidley said.

I don't see what the salary cap has to do with anything. If a player gets a second job outside football they don't have to declare it under salary cap rules unless they work for a company that is a sponsor - and believe it or not the ACT Brumbies are not a sponsor of the Newcastle Knights. It probably shouldn't happen but the NRL actully come out of it looking like dickheads for stopping him because it looks like they're shit scared of RU as a competitior to the NRL, which it isn't.

How about NRL players that have had a go at boxing? Surely they haven't all been charity matches? I doubt that someone like SBW would be told that he can't box unless his pay check comes under the salary cap.

Why do they need a collision coach in union? There are none. Players just fall and turn thieir bodies to try and keep the ball

the rule is you have to disclose 3rd party agreements to the NRL. he didn't

the Brumbies are competitors of the Raiders

the ARU competes against the NRL

you're simple if you can't see that
