League: Marshall to make final decision tonight

The uncertainty will finally come to an end tonight, when Benji Marshall makes a decision on his rugby league future.
Both the Cronulla Sharks and St George-Illawarra Dragons will today make a final presentation to Marshall.
It has become a two legged race since talks between the Melbourne Storm and Marshall broke down due to contract length.
Marshall's agent Martin Tauber says both clubs have until seven o'clock this evening and after that a decision can be expected.

don't forget that's 7pm NZ time ( 5pm Sydney time ) and that article was written before this morning's developments - it's over. Hopefully the players can put this aside

You can't blame him for issuing a deadline, he wants to play footy.

This...all this 'thinks he's bigger than the club' is just bullshit, he's got other offers that are very competitive and he's said he needs something in writing or he will take said other offer, he doesnr want it to drag out.

With Gas and Dugan, there were no other offers so the club could take it's time. Now, when we are competing for a player who just wants to get into it after waiting for over a week for an official offer, the incompetence of the power that be shine through.

Wow....not someone I would think believes it is or was as simple as just signing a contract.

spot on Benny - the club wants Marshall, that much is very clear. If they fail to get the offer through it's yet another administrative bungle

Mark Geyer: What I’d like to know is, how did Benji Marshall leaving rugby union turn into him holding a rugby league team to ransom? How did Benji being as humble as pie with his tail between his legs turn into issuing an ultimatum to an NRL club – in this case the Dragons?

Your a little off re-other offers in your second paragraph, the difference here is that Benji enjoys the media circus and chooses 's to play along brandishing one club against another for self gratification , he enjoys washing his laundry in public!!!!

I personally hope he goes to the Sharks, we need a quality 7 not a show pony 6!!

Rant over :)

Well that depends, is he waiting for an offer or for a fully signed and certified contract? I don't believe he is holding a knife to the club's throat or is as dramatic as the media are making it out - more likely, he has said that he wants written confirmation of their verbal offer by Friday or he will take the other (very reasonable) offer that he has officially received.

I know what major contracts entail, but by all reports the guy wants an offer, in writing, and if the club cannot give that to him based on what they SHOULD know they are able to spend (in terms of money and playing positions) then they shouldn't have expressed interest in the first place! It's incompetent and embarrassing for the club.

I'm on the fence in regard to his signing as I don't have a crystal ball and its hard to say if his form last year with the Tigers is a true reflection of his current ability or his attitude at the time. I don't blame Benji for giving a deadline as he wants to get back to playing and I'm sure in his head that would've been this week yet he's still to receive a formal offer in writing. Sure there are many variables that could be causing delays, as reported but not confirmed it may require releasing a player and then finding them a new contract, the Benji contract needs to be compliant with Salary Cap rules, third party agreements have to be locked in, the NRL has to approve it so the Dragons would be working with them and that may also delay proceedings. If the wheels are in motion and that can be shown to Benji's management that its a formality I don't see why they wouldnt extend the deadline. When it's all said and done if Benji doesn't earn his money then the simple solution is to select him on the Bench or NSW Cup and he'll ask for a release so I don't see it as a huge risk more so if he fails it will be a disruption and temporarily tie up some salary cap

Marshall decision expected Friday night

The Benji Marshall saga continues as to whether he will sign with NRL teams, St George Illawarra or Cronulla.
Although a decision was expected yesterday, Thursday, by Marshall and his management to join either the Dragons or Sharks for a 30-month contract, that did not eventuate.
The Leader understands that the Dragons are still the preferred option but Marshall’s management wants the formal offer in writing by the Dragons today, Friday, by 5pm.
The Leader has learned that Marshall and his management have agreed verbally to the Dragons offer but are waiting to see documentation.
Marshall’s management has hinted that if the Dragons do not table the written offer to the former Wests Tigers five-eighth, he may decide to ‘‘jump ship’’ and accept the Sharks offer.
The Sharks deal is estimated at $1 million and the Dragons at $1.1 million.
The Dragons have 12 players coming off contract at the end of this season.
The Leader also understands that salary cap issues were raised by the Dragons with the NRL to accommodate Marshall’s return to rugby league after he quit his two-year deal with Super 15 rugby union club, Auckland Blues.

I have to agree with this.

It has really dragged on, and as much as I respect Geyer's opinion, I wonder if we can really apportion all blame to Marshall.

A contract, as Benny says, can take many forms. It doesnt need to be the completed agreement, but a formal document detailing the "terms" of employment. Saints have never denied chasing him, we were the frontrunners for some weeks now. Personally, I don't care if we sign him or not, but the club, by default has put itself in an embarrassing position as BV said.

Anyway, this circus will end today.

Imagine Weidler sniffing around the club trying to get information...you'd just tell him to piss off wouldn't you! It's like an annoying fly or mosquito that just won't buzz off, only with a bigger head.
