Benji: The Greatest Myth

Benji Marshall is not a halfback. He can't run a side by himself. He is an instinctive player, not a controlling one.

He is at his best when he is running the football, picking his moments to injecting himself. Today he was trying to come up with a winning play everytime he touched the ball, that's not what he should be there for.

The loss of Farah today was too much, as he organises and controls the side.

Once again this comes back to Tim Sheens signing John Morris as a replacement halfback for Scott Prince, and not signing a proper halfback.

A thread with posts claiming Benji and SBW as the biggest myths of the last 10 years.

Are people really... and i mean really that geniused or do they just make spur of the moment posts without thinking it through?

Forum is full of absolute plonkers.

Hard to say. People put him in the top 10 players. In terms of the impact he CAN have upon a game, he's definitely in the top 10. Things just seem to happen around him. The amount of opportunist tries he has scored is freakish. He can turn a game its head.

Having said all that, if a team could choose any player in the game as the foundation of their side, Benji Marshall is very unlikely to be in the top 10 names thrown around. If he was, it'd be virtue of his off field marketability.

I do think he's a bloody good foil for Farah who plays the role of half back from dummy half. If anything, today showed how important Farah is too us.

People who bag Benji are simply "people who do not have Benji in their team"

However, these same people would shoot their load if BQ Marshall put pen to paper for their club.

Simple.

He is the most amazing player, as far as freaky talent we have seen in a long time, he is unfortunately being bottled up as a halfback instead of being allowed to explode as five eighth.

We will one day sign a dominant half and Benjamin will once again silence the knockers.

These Myth threads are the greatest myth of all. They lost all sincerity after the Manly one last year.

As an organiser, Benji is probably the worst halfback in the game. However with somebody like Scott Prince orchestrating the attack, Benji is given flexibility to chose when to enter the play. That's when he's running wider causing grief to opposition outside backs.

lol at SBW being a myth.

El Masri said he is the greatest player he's ever played with.

SBW was just that good.

Marshall could be good, but his ego is f**ked and he doesn't get any support.

Him playing with Morris is like getting a quadraplegic to run a marathon.

Would agree that he is more 'instinctive' than 'controlling'

I do want to say that for all the criticism he has copped, he is a Premiership and World Cup winning play-maker. Not even the great JT can say that.

All you people heckling John Morris have no idea
He tries hard
Plus he visits lots of schools, homeless shelters and AA meetings
Thus the tigers can't buy a win but get an honourable mention in the good guys section of the Daily Astonisher
Some things are more important than the 2 points ...

I started to think that Benji was a bit of a myth, but towards the end of last year and during the WC he proved that completely wrong.
SBW was never going to an absolute legend, just too stupid, nothing and I mean nothing upstairs.

Overrated, you can't go past cutie. Loackyer and Wallace make him look much better than he is

Although he can show "brilliance" to dominate a game every five or six weeks he makes too many errors every other week. These have been in his game since day dot. Not because he has to try to do everything for lack of quality players around him but because his footballing brain is not programmed to "play smart" enough of the time. Too much touch footy flair in him. Marshall is a great attacking player but unfortunately he is consistently inconsistent and therefore always going to be thought of as overrated, regardless of his premiership and that massive world wide tournament known as the World Cup.
