Parramatta coach Brad Arthur approached for Dragons job, CEO says ‘hands off’

One more guys.......

NINE months ago, he was overlooked for the Cowboys coaching post.

Now Brad Arthur has become one of the code’s most sought-after coaches with three NRL clubs, including St George Illawarra, targeting the Eels mentor.

But Parramatta CEO Scott Seward has issued a hands-off edict to NRL rivals circling the rookie coach, who has restored credibility to the reigning wooden spooners.

News Corp can reveal Arthur fielded an approach last week from a third party with close ties to the Dragons, who have yet to appoint a coach for next season.

The associate inquired about the term of Arthur’s Eels contract, which expires at the end of 2016. News of rival overtures has reached Parramatta’s assistant staff, who hope Arthur will not emulate predecessor Ricky Stuart and walk out on his existing deal.

Master coach Wayne Bennett and Titans assistant Neil Henry are also contenders for the Dragons job. But with Bennett considering staying loyal to Newcastle, the Dragons are keeping their options open and Arthur shapes as a viable target.

Despite arriving amid political turmoil at Parramatta, Arthur has turned the Eels into a finals threat and is a contender for Dally M Coach of the Year honours.

Arthur was short-listed for the North Queensland job last September but Parramatta pounced after the Cowboys opted for Roosters assistant Paul Green.

The Eels’ revival has vindicated Arthur’s appointment and Seward is adamant the club can stave off a poaching threat.

“It wouldn’t surprise me at all if they (the Dragons) are keen,” the Eels boss said.

“Any club that has a vacancy would be inquiring for someone of Brad’s calibre. Look what he has been able to do for us in a short period of time.

“Any club would be doing their due diligence into Brad’s capabilities and professionalism.

“That aside, he’s just a great bloke, so I’m confident he won’t be going anywhere.”

While the Eels have Arthur secured for another two years, the club is considering extending him beyond 2016.

“We certainly want Brad at Parramatta for a long time and we are looking at options to do that,” he said.

“It’s not just Brad we want to keep, we want to keep the team of assistants he has put together.

“He’s in the first year of a three-year contract and we intend to have him here for a very long time.”

Reprieve Steve.

In all seriousness, it wouldn't surprise if the Shire had Steve on their short list. Might fit into their budget.
