best forward pack in the comp

They'll start coming in droves now
At their best, when they have all their top players available, the Rabbitohs do still have one of the best forward packs. They came up against a team that frankly would have put 40 at least on any other team, so I can't blame their reserve-graders for not picking up the slack.

I'm so sick of this "Oh they have injuries" bullsh*t...

Souths had 1 former (crocker) and 3 current (Luke, Asotasi, Burgess) internationals with another fringe international (pettybourne) in their starting forward pack.

Yes the bench were mainly youngsters but FFS its not like Penrith's bench was brimming with talent tonight.

They have been an extreme disappointment this year and should rightfully be ridiculed for the entire pack's carry on in the pre-season and even the mid-season jibbering of Asotasi

Souths, Cronulla and the Raiders are shedding doubt on the cliche matches are won in the forwards.

I do still rate the Souths pack when fully fit.

I dunno about that. Crocker has spent so much time on the sidelines the past couple of years he's had no match fitness. Pettybourne 6 weeks or so earlier in the year and so did Isaac Luke. That kind of stuff takes a toll on clubs when you've half your forward pack playing with injuries, and the other half rookies.

That's a fair point because no other club has played as many games as Souths this year or been forced to operate on a shoestring budget like theirs either.

Yes but when Luke, Crocker or Pettybourne were injured they had Stuart, Lowe (the good one), Taylor, Falloon and various others in the side.

Souths pack has not been any less than half origin or test players all season. There can be no excuses for such poor performances

Their only excuse is having that genius Tallis as their forwards coach, he has done a great job with that highly rated 2milion dollar pack:lol::lol:

Panthers have a pretty good pack when firing

Civoniceva (Best prop in the game)
Grant/McKendry (Better young props in the game)
Kingston (Good hooker)
Waterhouse (Origin player)
Pritchard (International)
Lewis (International)

...and racially abuses them... and pulls stitches out... and dives to win penalties and get opposition players sent off... and is an all round general f**kwit of the highest order. Good player though if you ignore all that sh*t.

As per usual.

Maybe next year Souffs.

Imagine if they didn't have the best forward pack in the comp!?

Back in your burrow, you hand gesture merchants.

LOL @ Gordon Fallis. Keep up the good work champion.

when fully fit and firing on all cylinders manly's pack is the best.

was proved only once this year when they played the full 80mins earlier on in the year against saints.
they're really the only team to give it to saints this year!

Incorrect. Our props are bog ordinary. Watmough and Stewart are playing like shadows of their former selves.

Dragons

8. Weyman, 9. Priddis, 10. Hunt, 11. Creagh, 12. Scott, 13. Young, BENCH: 14. Fien, 15. Costigan/Emmett, 16. Prior, 17. Green/Saffy

...and with the Dragons team, you could even drop Priddis, start Young at hooker, and put Jeremy Smith or Trent Merrin at lock.
Not exactly sure what you have done there ...

Are you suggesting that current NZ rep J Smith isn't good enough to get a spot in our full-strength pack? And that current QLD rep Costigan is only a 50/50 chance in competition with Emmett?

Our full-strength pack (with no injuries at all) would be:

8. Weyman
9. Fien/Young
10. Hunt
11. Creagh
12. Scott
13. Smith

14. Young/Fien
15. Costigan
16. Merrin
17. Saffy/Prior

18. Saffy/Prior
19. Priddis
20. Emmett
21. Green
22. Greenfield
22. Marketo
23. Paulo (this guy hasn't seen a single minute of First Grade this year, not sure why we bought him last season!)

P.S. In reality, we would be a better team if Hornby was kicked out, Fien moved to halfback, Young to starting hooker, and Priddis to the bench (like it was against Manly)

We have one of the most underrated packs in the comp this year, come finals we will excel.
We beat Warriors, Canberra, Souths, Manly, Storm, Panthers, though the forwards

When I think about it, the 'best forward pack' is debatable, simply because there are packs that play differently.
I.e.
You have the small but extremely fast and skilful forward pack of the Titans, who excel at getting quick play the balls and running strong lines despite their size. A team that really can aim up and simply smash other teams through smart passing and the brilliant kicking game of their halfback, with a hooker that eats metres up like daisies and has a brilliant offload. They tackle quickly and pile numbers in; they can do this all night long because they are easily the fittest team in the competition; watch their 80 minute performances against Manly in Round 7 or the Warriors in Round 21 for proof.

You have the huge and hard-running pack of the Raiders that smashes teams with their strength and bulk, and also have a good degree of talent (Shillington's drop-bomb try assist anyone?). This pack simply dominates you and physically overpowers and terrorises other packs, and if Campese is having a good day this pack is everyone's nightmare. They tend to be slower in defence but are generally effective in their tackles. Watch any first-half footage of Raiders V Knights in Round 19 for proof.

You then have the balanced medium-build and quick forward pack of the Eels, who have strength and speed that can get the team really rolling forward, and every single player has the ability to offload; watch their 'hot-potato' against the Storm in Round 13 for proof. Unfortunately, though they gain more metres than the majority of other forward packs and have one of the best benches in the comp, the team still relies solely on Fui to make a charge, Hayne to play god and the halves to execute well for them to score any points.

Each of these three example packs are suitably different in style and the way they are used, but all three can achieve similar results for their teams; wins.
Still, my vote goes to the Rabbitohs forward pack when they are at their best, or the Raiders forward pack.
