James Murphy?

Murphy had a cool lead style but he was a bit of a one-trick pony and never really showed anything that great in the rhythm dept. If I was gonna cite other DM guitarists I'd probably go for someone like Jon Levasseur or Karl Sanders.

I do tend to agree to a cerrtain extent.

Have you got any of his solo albums? One of the all-time great tracks on 'Convergence' called 'Touching the Earth'

It's acoustic with Chuck Billy on vocals but it's stunning. Very emotional.

Download it.

Gilmour is a must for this comp as is Santana, can't remember Neil Schon though.

Neil Schon was a teenage prodigy who at the age of 15 was asked by Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton to join their respective bands (Clapton at that stage was with Derek and the Domino's). He joined Santana. He left to form the band Journey, who he has been with ever since. Well worth checking out some of his stuff.

LOL. A thousand mentions of Slash - who is a cheap hybrid of Joe Perry and Brian Robertson.

I cannot belive no one has mentioned Steve Morse! 5 times guitar player of the year over the likes of EVH, Stevie Ray, Gary Moore, Malmsteen and young Satriani.

No mentions either of Michael Schenker, Rory Gallagher, John Sykes, Jeff Beck, Pete Townhend, Jake E Lee, Vivian Campbell, Ted Nugent, Glenn Tipton or Matthias Jabs?

For mine:
Steve Morse is the best clinical player.
Jimmy Page has the best all round knowledge.
Tony Iommi has the best emotion - and the best bend/vibrato
Richie Blackmore through his classical and blues roots, the most diverse range. And the best riffmaker.

Also: Satriani was the first to outdo Hendrix. EVH equalled Jimi, and I'd reckon Blackmore did too.

I could rave for hours about how good who was, and why Slash and Hammet are sh*t compared to others, and why Iommi's work is ten times what Metallica's was, and why Thin Lizzy's "Life Live" has the best guitar work outside G3. However, to me, there is only one true guitar god, whose legacy exceeds the other put together.

Chuck Berry.

And answering the Rush question - check out Spirit of the Radio, YYZ, Limelight, Red Sector A, and Earthshine (if it's on it)

Begin the day with a friendly voice......!

The beauty of Lifeson is that he compliments the music, and never dominates it like a stereotypical lead guitarist. Yet he's go so much to teach in his work. Fantsatic.

Not just Lifeson. Lee and Peart are at the top of the heap at their instruments too. They combine perfectly imo.
