I think he attempted to do something similar earlier in the game and screwed up, which lead to a try.

So he was standing behind play the next time NZ made a break, thing is Puletua was rampaging with the ball when he gave it to Paul, imagine what would have happend to Buderus if he had tried it on Puletua.
