I was reading an article in a mag about how due to the increased amount of music being downloaded, that record companies have decided to counter this by looking at other ways to gain larger profits from an "artist" hence the new fashion of the Artificial Manufactured music we have today. Eg. Idol shows around the world, and crap like Jessica Simspon etc.

Basically they are flooding the music market with alot of crap, Much more than they used to. Signing up heaps of new people to make a record which results in them making a quick $$$$. Then when that band or perons short music career is finished they sign a new person or band up and the process continues. Resulting in stuff released which is of a lower standard of quality.

Kind of like a factory line pumping out alot of new products and because the product is not being hand crafted its more likely to be of a lesser quality.

This got me thinking when was music at it's best? and have we seen the end of great music. Are we currently in a music drought?

i reckon the 80's and 90's were the best, well for me anyway. I dont mind some of the 70's stuff and 60's is ok.

But since i have to pick one, id have to say the 90's

most of the 2000's music is just 1960's-1990's songs sung by someone else or samples taken from them

A toss up between the 60s and 70s.

60s had a lot of pioneers, venturing out and breaking down barriers that had never been broken before. The Beatles, The Doors, Rolling Stones, early Led Zep, the birth of heavy metal, Bob Dylan, Hendrix and all the crazy psychedelic stuff.

The 70s saw it all settle down a bit, but the music seemed to get a bit more direction and set the templates that we all know and love today. The peak of Led Zeppelin, arrival of AC/DC, birth of punk, Queen, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd etc.

I went for the 70s.

I suppose it depends what sort of music you're into though.

I voted 80's, a lot of good metal bands came from that era. Personally, I think music has declined. We have more of that rap stuff which essentially involves no talent (I can swear as fast as them too) and some rock bands with no background music except for guitars strumming 3 repetitive chords, and singers with absolutely no talent whatsoever (eg. Simple Plan?). But there are a lot of good bands still keeping up the 80's talent, eg. The Casanovas.

80s were awful. I'd have to say the latter half of the 90s to the present. Most every musical 'genre' is being represented, whilst new artists are constantly breaking boundaries and re-inventing the style.

hehe.... 80s were freakin awesome!!! That'd be my pick, with 70s coming a very close second. Judas Priest and Iron Maiden started in the 70s but they were more predominant in the 80s, and the 80s was the best decade for metal. The last 5 years have really shown the decline of musical talent.

The Casanovas are 70's if anything. Their main influences are AC/DC and The Rolling Stones. Which are both essentially "70's" bands.

70's gets my vote. My favourite bands all originated and hit their peak in the 70's. Especially the Aussie pub scene. AC/DC. Rose Tattoo, The Angels and Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs are 4 of my all time favourites.

The 70's also saw the birth of "modern rock" with Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones leading the way (I know The Beatles at TRS are known for being 60's bands but you can't say they weren't popular during the 70's).

Just a coincidence that the top 5 bands as far as "influences" go are all from the 70's? Or is it because they produced the best music known to man.

80's is by far the worst. Music commercialisation originated in the 80's with "hair metal" (Ron Jeremy please don't attack me ;-) ) which is by far the worst genre ever created. I'm convinced that Satan himself created the idea of reverb on whiney vocals and a generic guitar tone that sounds like it's been through a washing machine half a dozen times. It was also the decade for weird pop and electro which just scares me.

Although a few good bands did originate out of the 80's. Midnight Oil (who are in my top 5 of all time) U2 & INXS to name a few.

I never said it was a good song, I said it wasn't deserving of the worst song ever award that it picked it up.

this is an age old debate. It ends up being a matter of opinion as what is good is subject to taste and the emotive value of the song(s) for you personally

I've got records ( those black, flat, vynyl things ) that date back as far as you like. In every generation, there has always been a vacuous lot of crap mixed with some pretty good stuff.

64-74.

Virtually all of the music I listen to was either created then or deeply influences my favourite current bands.

Beatles, Who, Beach Boys, Byrds, Dylan, Badfinger, Big Star, Cheap Trick, Raspberries, etc...

The 1970's get my vote, though I also love a lot of stuff from the late sixties as well.
Despite being only eighteen, I don't listen to much new stuff. Once in awhile I hear a new song that I like but apart from that I listen to all old stuff.
So I'd have to say that, in general, I don't think new music, especially from about 2000 onwards, is anywhere near the standards of previous decades.

Why all the bagging of the 80's? They had some shit but some bloody good stuff as well. NoFX Bad Religion Minor Threat n The Descendants are all very good bands, along with the glory days of Metallica!
