Penrith have always had some cracking reserve grade sides, unfortunately we have to play them in First grade

Cheers...brings back some memories and I forgot Trewhella played half.

John Thomas (I think) didn't play FG until 1987. The rest had all played quite a bit before this game.

The 2005 JF Grand Final had some future players worth noting.
Eels had Krisnan Inu, Ben Farrar, Matt Keating, David Williams.
Dragons had Josh Morris, Beau Ryan, Brett Morris, Chris Houston, Dan Hunt and Jason Nightingale.
Not reserve Grade, but amazing.

These aren't the exact sides they fielded on Grand Final day, Penrith in 1991 didn't even make it that far but these are the sides at full strength. A Cronulla side in the early 90's would be really strong also as would Newcastle, Brisbane and Canberra.

Without seeing team lists (anyone got link to comprehensive team lists?) I agree with Brutus. Some of those Norths sides were virtual first grade packs. I remember seeing footage of Souths v Penrith (I think) in 86 with the likes of MG and Ian Roberts playing - both great sides. Also seeing the linked footage of the Knights with Joey as reggies half - great.

Question, which great reserve grade premiers became first grade premiers a few years later?

Yeah we had a fair front row happening there.

Chuck in Campo, Carney, Robbo and Graham then that's a fair football team right there.

As someone pointed out, Gafa scored an unbelievable amount of points that year.

That Dogs side was symptomatic of the 'buy out of trouble' philosophy that exists in the club.

It's not that it was because of any amount of amazing depth or anything, it's just that the Dogs had bought horribly over the years and had a sh*tload of players that needed forcing out of their top tier contracts.

Norths had some stellar reserve grade sides in the early 1990's IIRC. Manly's reserve grade has, by and large, been a steaming pile of sh*t for most of our history. The only decent one I remember is the Queensland Cup outfit led by DCE.

I am pretty sure I can remember Manly reserve grade sides that had several players that were already internationals - prime example Ray Brown. Don't know if they won any GF's.
