BHU Stats and What They Tell me

Braden Hamlin-Uele:
15 minutes, 1 run, 8 metres.
10 tackles, 3 misses.

I say that not as a slight on him, but to highlight two things:

1. We barely touched the ball the entire time he was on. This is how you manufacture a result - referee one side out of the game. It does my head in.

Obviously I'm like the rest of you, and livid because it was my team on the receiving end last night.
But honestly, this shit has got to stop.
There has been some unbelievable play this season, but it gets absolutely ruined by over officiating.
If the ref misses something, so be it.
That's what match review is for.

But this bullshit of the bunker poring over every available angle of the lead up to a try while the kick is being lined up, only to find a minor indiscretion and over turn it, is getting beyond a joke.

Likewise teams challenging a decision so the bunker can look at something the ref missed earlier.
Case in point, last night the Wahs challenged a knock on (I think) from their attempt to regather a clearing kick.
It was an obvious knock on, but the challenge was "we know we knocked on, but think you missed dangerous contact on our kicker". Sure enough, minor contact with the kicker, penalty.
F*&k that.
The rule clearly states: “The captain can only challenge decisions by the referee, which cause play to stop (i.e. any decision by the referee to ‘play on’ cannot be challenged)".
Why then do we see this every game, every week?
Get rid of it.

I could write on this all day, as I'm sure you lot could as well.
This Bunker/Video Review/Captain's Challenge shit needs to be pissed right off.

2. Why play BHU if he is only good for 15 minutes? We already have one of those in Royce. Pick one or the other, or get them fit enough to play longer.

We're up against a big pack in the Wahs and you pick two guys who barely pump out 30 minutes between them?
Unbelievable.

While I'm at it, stop being so pharquing pre-programmed with the bench rotation.
The commentators made a comment last night about "Fitzy is sending Kaufusi back out to steady the ship".
Of course he was. It was the 67th minute.
That's when he comes back on.

Never mind we'd pretty much spent the entirety of the second half without the ball, were looking fatigued, getting rolled and clearly needed to shore up the middle.
No, it's not the 67th minute yet. We can't bring Herb back on.

Throw in his insistence of finding a spot in the side somewhere, anywhere for DA at the expense of others who specialise in the position.
Yes DA has been serviceable while Nicho has been out. I get it.
But we lose Ramien and Sifa, both of who are good for ~150 metres a game, and we play DA in their place?
Where are those metres coming from?

Why not debut Vea'ila?
A specialist right centre.
One who's been killing it in NSW Cup.
At home, on Old Boys Day.
Give the kid a run.

Or, if not him, how about Hiroti?
You know, the guy who's been around the squad for 3 years or so now.
Who also spends a lot of time in the centres.
Who has done a job every time he's come in.

Instead we try to manufacture a centre out of an out and out reserve grader.
The end result? 12 runs, 91 metres, 9 tackles, 5 misses.

Pillock.

A lot to unpack there and all valid.
I was reminded last night by a mate that it was the first time back at the ground since the Penrith loss. Walking up Woolooware road post game - I realised I am an idiot and should never have come back.
The performance aside where the sharks are there own worst enemy, the state of the game is deplorable.
How those in charge have let this occur is inexcusable.
The team itself and the coach - I’ll save my thoughts till post seasons end as there may be some method to Fitz madness. I don’t think they have had a fully fit side for an age. But Uele is and has been a liability for an age. Take a long spell and get right.
Just another year of ups and downs

The refs the bunker, and further up Vlandys Annesley wrecking the game.
There was a call in Parra dragons game totally wrong.
Gutho goes to ground with ball not a finger laid on him.
Ref calls submitted in tackle.
Nooooo what that was is a voluntary tackle and a penalty.
After they call Dragons touch him.
That rule has always been there the players know it but the refs don't call it.
Instead DWZ lays down each time wanting a penalty for knock to head but he does not go to HIA the rules are different each each each game and which players involved

The coach and assistant need to have their performance reviewed . Especially player rotations. I like Fitz but the whole effort needs to lift in 2025.

This is one of my major gripes with him.
Everything is scripted, and is never deviated from.

There have been countless times this year where we have been starting to open the game up and it seemed like the perfect time to unleash the wrecking balls.
But no, you have to wait until it's inside the final 10 minutes of the first half.
Can't have them spend an extra 5 minutes out there than what they've been conditioned for.

Likewise when we've been under the pump.
Time to bring back Toby and Herb to shore up the middle.
But again, no can't do that till about the 60-65 minute mark.
That's when they come back.

By then the damage is done.

Pharque that.
Seize the moment, and either capitalize on, or shift momentum.

Pillock.

Simple answer is there was no one else. Dale F gone, Jessie C injured, otherwise it probably would have been Jess.

Which reminds me of something else I've been meaning to bring up.
Namely, do we have an over-reliances on sport science?

Are we watching players' GPS units, analysing data and making decisions on when it is best to replace or reintroduce them, rather than when the game is calling for it?

Wayne Bennet, think of him what you will, made a very astute observation a while back.
He was asked about other coaches using technology and why he didn't seem to use it as much.
I don't remember the exact quote, but it was something like "I don't need a computer to tell me when someone is putting in or not, or when they are getting tired. I have a pair of eyes, I use them. Coaches rely too much on data and have no feel for the game".

So true, every game is different so new to change strategy for each game.
The subs come on basically same each week.
Always hold back the 4th player till 2nd half gets same token minutes no matter who it is.
You can bet this weekend Eagles will come out on fire they need to why not change our starters.
How about Uele big body out there for first 15, then get him off.
What teams don't like it not knowing what you are going to do.
We know how Fitz rotates the forwards if we do, any decent coach will and be ready

Yep, yer right, for a short 15 minute stint anyway. BHU might only have been included on the basis of experience.
But he offered nothing he dosent go looking for a hit up, and we needed one.
Tuku yes young but might have thought his a chance to impress.
I get this feeling about Uele it's just go through motions that's it

Uele has played 12 games this year 294 minutes at just over 24 mins per game.
Hunt 15 games 349 minutes just over 23 mins.

I don't even remember Uele being on field that long he has been basically invisible.

Hunt for his mistakes sometimes, you actually notice him do a hit up.

What they are getting paid, one is certainly not earning his coin

Yeah his stats don't look good but as mentioned we had no ball. If BHU is fit we need him. The club feels very strongly about experience up front and the result when we had Hazleton/Kafusi vs the bash brothers from Penrith is a go to point about that.

BHU needs 40 plus against Manly. Start him and see how long he can last. If we can't get it right and him fit I do question the point of it given we have Hunt in the impact role.

Exactly. This wasn't intended as a gripe on him, just to illustrate we were refereed out of the game while he was on. I watched it again.
We had the ball twice while he was out there.
The second time Jack spilled it on the 3rd tackle.

If BHU is fit we need him.

I feel we've been saying that for 2 years.
And honestly, I don't see it ending.
He needs one hell of an off season for me to even consider him next year.

The club feels very strongly about experience up front and the result when we had Hazleton/Kafusi vs the bash brothers from Penrith is a go to point about that.

Hard to argue with that.

Agree with this.
Though I question why his minutes have been down.

He played 41 minutes in rd19, 41 again in rd21 and 37 in rd24.

Amongst that for the Jets he has played 40 minutes in rd16, 51 minutes in rd17, 59 minutes in rd18 and 48 minutes in rd20.

That is surely more than enough to condition him for more than a token 15 minute appearance.

Frenzy. has suggested (a couple of times) that BHU has been struggling with Covid (long COVID???)…

If this is so, I’m sorry for him, but surely we act in THE CLUB’S best interests and just give him the rest of the year off to attempt to recover, because he’s not helping the team one bit, at the moment!

The club also has to look that we need success, and can't carry a player.
A player is quick to say to a club they want out when they feel that way.
How long do we carry Uele when it effects the team performance

10 tackles and 3 misses in such a short time is a worry. 1 hit up sounds lazy too, I know we hardly had the ball but come on, he couldn't get himself into a position to try and get us out of trouble or get a good roll on? That's what props are for.

It blows my mind that young blokes in the prime of their lives who train every single day for a living are totally f**ked after 12 minutes. To the point where they can't catch their breathe quickly and recover at all.

We kept the wrong bloke.
