Big Day Out 2012 will be the festivals last year in New Zealand

problem is...Soundwave listens to its fans big day out does what they want.

so many people have gone onto BDO forums or facebook asking for certain bands for headliner for example System of a Down since they reformed, Slipknot, Linmp Bizkit, Soundgarden the list goes on...but does BDO actually get these artists? NO they don't, AJ as much of a dick he can be is doing the fans in australia a favour by getting such a massive lineup out here. yes he snags them under bdo outs nose (i have no doubt he does) but the fact is, bands want to work with him and not West from BDO.

i remember a quote from the big day out camp in relation to a band (big at the time of the release) wanting to play on the festival and fans wanting them to come down too (band in question is good charlotte) they said something along the lines of "We don't want to bring out a band who WE think are shit, we want the fans to listen to music we think they should listen too" now to me that seems pretty bad. whats going to get fans through the gates? signing bands to come over who fans are demanding to see? or bands the festival thinks we should be listening too?

i'll find the link if i can

Agree, I always look forward to the SW lineup. Has never disappointed me. I barely even look at the BDO line up anymore. SW caters to more tastes I feel.

Yeah which I mean I do but there is no way it has more diverse line up than the BDO. A stronger one within its target audience certainly.

U can see now by the inclusion of cobra starship and hydro the hero, sound wave is slowly filtering in some alternative acts, even switch foot and bush are different to past years.

In the near future SW will be like BDO and another festival will come along

Pity no sleep till tried so early in sw's career. If it was in a few more years then I think it would've been more successful

Love the attached side article

Because the operator of the BDO has the interests of australian music as his number 1 priority
Talk about sour grapes and getting beat at your own game, maybe people are slowly moving away from Big Day Out because it's overpriced for the headliners they get, changed from what was essentially a rock festival to having Kanye West headlining, and having so many filler acts it hardly makes the day worthwhile.

BDO as we know it will be dead within 3 years, the fact that tickets are still on sale now, when they used to sell out in an hour is proof of that.
I remember Frenzal Rhomb teeing off over this around the time that announcements were being made. A festival that does f**k all for the local scene was the gist of their gripes with it (which, to be fair, BDO has always played alot of local talent as well as internationals)

Still rather this years BDO lineup to Soundwave.

No Sleep was the best festival iv'e ever been to by a long way
By far. Me first - frenzal - dropkick murphys - nofx - DESCENDENTS. f**kin stellar day

And I avoided the metal stage but the crowd was great at that festival as well, way less dickheads than other festivals

The problem with the BDO is that while they're diverse, they rarely even attract the best in their relative genres, if you want a truly diverse festival, you really need to get the cream of the crop in those areas. For the mostpart beyond the top 3 or 4 bands at the festival, it's almost all filler at BDO, so it no longer really even achieves it's goal. BDO has maintained it's solid crowds not so much due to it's lineups but more due to it becoming an annual tradition of for better or worse, getting a big group of mates, getting wasted and hearing some music, that you may or may not care about. This worked up until about 5 years ago, but now we've seen a steady increase in the amount of festivals we have, and not to mention their relative pulling powers have increased as well.

You could probably argue that Soundwave even offers a more diverse experience, just for the fact that they have so many quality bands in their relative genres and sub-genres. Whilst it may not cover everyone, it covers a large portion of the rock/punk/metal spectrum whereas BDO has very narrow scope in the spectrum of all it's relative genres it covers.

The fact that soundwave seems to have made olympic park it's home will likely mean the death of BDO in sydney, that's always been the thing holding soundwave back, it's shithouse venues or poor organisation. Given their close dates, it's unlikely BDO will continue to attract many avid rock fans anymore, which has always been their bread and butter.

Depends who they can get to headline.

Kanye West is pretty much at the top of his genre. Its hard to think of anyone in the history of hiphop who has at worst been so consistent with his music while also pushing the boundaries of what he makes. He is an ever evolving artist who constantly makes different sounding music which is normally of a high quality. While lyrically he is and will always be a bit weak (he sometimes has the odd interesting line) his production is getting better and better and he has always had a knack at producing killer tracks. Even when he was behind the boards some of the music he produced was ludicrously catchy like The Takover, Izzo (HOVA), Heart of the City, Encore and Lucifer these are tracks he produced for JayZ alone before he released his first album in 2004.

The issue is Kasabian who aren't very inspiring and they don't have too many rock groups on the cards that will wow anyone.

Yeah I agree about Kasabian.

Seriously they are a good band but not a "headliner"

All BDO needed this year was one more attractive Headliner and probably another well know dance act and it was as good a lineup as you could get.

If they managed some of the rumours like Blink or No Doubt or got someone currently charting like Coldplay, Maroon 5 or **cringe** Nickleback (which kind of shows the sad state of affairs in rock, go have a look at the top 50 aria chart, bloody pathetic) Anyway, it's good f**king line-up!

Add one of a thousand name dance acts, for arguments sake he got guetta (who I hate) or avicii or something, the line up is sorted.

Yes big day out doesn't always attract the guys who like the heavier side of rock, personally I like heavy, but not all day, just like i like dance occasionally, I wouldn't go to a dance festival though. When I go to a fest, it needs to have variety, BDO has always done that for me and never been a bad day.

In one day I can fullfill my oz rock fix, music I loved in high school fix, hip hop fix, dance fix, pop fix, it's great.

In a interview last month Ken West said they never got a no from Blink or Prince. They just didn't accept. They virtually had Bush & LMFAO but needed the funds for those 2. So backed off other festivals snapped them up. Any of those 4 adds headliners to the lineup.

That's the difference more festivals the only rock is Soundwave. So they need to compete with others for the other genre acts unlike the past.

Yep. Pretty reckless don't fit in to Soundwave however they are a different style of band and will get a different type of person in. I dare say most would of gone to BDO in the past.

I've been to two multi-day festivals in the US.
This one had a really diverse line-up. Went from the Offspring to Chuck Berry to the Foo Fighters, one after the other. Had 2 main stages which meant that I didn't have to sit through an artist I didn't like, but also meant that I missed some bands I wanted to see because someone I wanted to see more was on the other stage.

This one had a line-up which focused more on rock/hard rock acts, and had one main stage and 2 smaller satellite stages.

yeh i agree, I just wonder though because the promos for the news tend to dramatize everything

we normally get 45-50K it was bang on 50K last year but I didn't even consider going after the line up was released, my money has gone to the Soundwave this year

what ch9 didn't explain was if they sold the tickets and the people just didn't bother turning up because of the rain, or the tickets didn't sell, or they were just prizes and give aways and people didn't want them

in any case it should tell the promoters that douchebags like Kanye West are not BDO main liners
