Shellharbour Marlins say hello Sailor
Tim Barrow | May 10, 2008
WENDELL SAILOR is set to make his first step towards a return to the NRL with Jim Beam Cup team the Shellharbour City Marlins next weekend.
The former Wallabies and Brisbane Broncos star completes a two-year ban for cocaine use on Monday.
And the
Herald understands Sailor will line-up for the Marlins, which is a feeder club for St George Illawarra.
Marlins coach Dave Walsh, a former Illawarra Steelers front-rower, last night said Sailor's ability as a drawcard would be a massive boost for the club.
"We are certainly hoping to get him," he said. "It would be good interest, we're trying to establish ourselves in this competition. It's instant recognition, it's a way to attract sponsors. We haven't got a lot of major sponsors at the moment and it would certainly increase revenue."
However, Jim Beam Cup rivals Erina are poised to be immediate winners for the attention Sailor would bring to the competition.
In what would be a major money-spinner for the Central Coast club and provide national media exposure, Sailor and Shellharbour will play at Erina Oval next weekend.
It is believed another Dragons player, possibly prop Jon Green will make way for Sailor to play for the Marlins.
In the Jim Beam Cup, a points system for professional players acts like a salary cap for clubs.
Sailor will receive a discount, having been away from football for the past two seasons, but Walsh said it was likely the former international would still attract 15 points of a 100-point cap.
Green could switch to Carlton League club Helensburgh, having played for both the Tigers and the Marlins this season.
In just their second season in the Jim Beam Cup, Shellharbour were fifth on the ladder heading into last night's clash with Chester Hill.
NSW Cup team Newtown had made an offer to Sailor to play in what is the premier statewide feeder competition to the NRL, but the plan was vetoed by the Dragons because of the financial opportunities it would create for the Sydney Roosters, with which the Jets are aligned.
Sailor will front a media conference at WIN Stadium on Monday when he and the club can officially end a ban on discussing the 33-year-old's future.
While Sailor's link with the Dragons has been one of the worst-kept secrets in the NRL this season, coach Nathan Brown would only say Sailor's signing was a "work in progress".
