Hi all.

Doing a university assignment of rugby league media and would love your input into Australian rugby league magazines.

Out of Big League and Rugby League Week, which do you prefer and why? And what article(s) in either magazine have attracted your attention most in 2013?

Collating your responses for a project.

Really appreciate the help, dudes/dudettes!

Cheers,

The BIG LEAGUE, over the past two seasons, has condensed its sections, removed the children's insert and trimmed away the journalistic / commentary content. Furthermore, none of the team lists usually reflect actual teams that run out.

There used to be some really good interviews as well, but it's gone the way of most media where 90% is picture and 10% is actual reading matter.

It proudly declares it is 'still' $5, but since they made the cut backs last season, the magazine is a ghost of itself.

I don't get the online / app version either, and I only buy it out of habit.

Otherwise, with all the e-media of the 21st century, it's probably a redundant format and redundant magazine. For $5, you get better value elsewhere.

Big League, probably because I don't like the size of Rugby League Week, and the fact it's 'the official magazine'. There's no specific article that get my attention, but I probably like the Young Gun article the most.

League Week, though I don't generally go out of my way to buy it - if I'm in the airport or something I'll grab a copy.

Looking behind the scenes of how clubs and players go about their business is probably the most interesting.

I've never bought Big League but RLW seems better value.

Correct, largely redundant.

Big League, only when travelling or for the GF special edition. RLW has been gutted over the years. Remember the old RLW summer specials ? those things were a beast ( 100+ pages) Surprised both mags have survived this long.

this year is the first time I haven't bought a copy of either magazine since the early 90's.

I found that they were writing more fluff pieces about players and and much less analysis of games as well as less reporting of grassroots footy.

RLW has become a gossip rag, it used to be the home of the best RL Journos.

The only magazine I get now is Men of League

Yeah this. I want to read more of the old coaches input like McGuire used to do and the really in depth previews (I think it was Matt someone used to do).

Footy knowledge and player analysis = buy
Player tattoos and favourite song = no.

Sadly It has gone the way of the former.

I still like it for the lower grades team lists and if there was more input in to that stuff I might buy more.

What a great read. Can be downloaded for free as well, but membership is worth it and you get a print copy. If you enjoy a bit of mature/in depth content rather than RLW with its 'which player was spotted talking to ex model. etc ' Which player had a run in with the highway patrol last week, watch this space etc etc yawn. RLW became MX mag somewhere along the line.
