Big Mac and a bagful of cash
By Phil Rothfield and Rebecca Wilson
From: The Sunday Telegraph
August 08, 2010
THIS is the car park of McDonald's at Padstow that is apparently
well known to a few rugby league player agents
- and not for the Big Macs and Quarter Pounders they serve inside.
Various sources have revealed it is the drop-off point used by one NRL club for secret cash payments inside a paper bag to players that are not included in the salary cap.
And just so readers don't think it's the Bulldogs, we can reveal that the club in question is a long way from the Padstow area and the money is delivered by a person with no obvious connection to the club.
It is seen as a much safer way of cheating the books, unlike Melbourne Storm, who kept records of two contracts for some players, even if one set was hidden inside the chief executive's home.
We're told as much as $50,000 was handed over in the car park this year to the manager of a big-name forward.
We'd like to tell you more but legal restrictions prevent us from writing which club we believe is involved, because there is no documented proof to back it up in court.
